Maddy.Horne Glass Castle is told using first person perspective, Jeannette uses techniques like including emotions and specific memories that only Jeannette experienced, she used pronouns referring to herself using “I” and “me”, she also never included any thoughts from her siblings and stories from when she wasn‘t there. 3y
Maddy.Horne Summary Pt. 1 - The second half of this story continues when Jeanettes parents refuse help despite their obvious need for assistance as their children are starving and have resorted to rummaging through garbages and stealing in order to eat. After a visit from children protective services, Jeannette‘s mom gets a job as a teacher but it‘s short lived as she decides to focus on her art career. 3y
Maddy.Horne Pt. 2 - Rex‘s excessive drinking habits continue to drain the money that they‘ve been earning. Jeanette grows fed up with how selfish her parents actions have been and she confronts them about being bad parents, and she refuses to apologize about it, in return her dad punishes her by hitting her. This was the final straw, this is when she comes the the conclusion that she won‘t take it anymore and she decides to start an escape fund. 3y

Maddy.Horne Pt. 3 - Jeannette and Lori come up with a plan to move away to New York and start their own lives there. They put all their money into their escape fund and after several months they seem to have saved up a decent amount. But as expected when their dad finds these funds, he takes it and spends it on a car, this absolutely shatters Lori‘s heart 3y
Maddy.Horne Pt. 4 -Jeannette was able to get Lori a summer babysitting job and she was able to get a bus ticket to New York. 3y
Maddy.Horne Pt. 5 - Flash forward in New York, Lori works in a restaurant, and a year after she moved out, Jeannette joins her in New York and finishes her high school career in the big city. Another year after Jeannette moves, Brian also joins them, and at the age of 12 Maureen moved in with Lori. 3y
Maddy.Horne Pt. 6 - A couple years later, Rex and Rose Mary move out to New York and claim that Lori is stealing their children. They live homeless on the streets, and a couple years later they are in an apartment and Maureen moves in with them. Maureen ends up getting to her breaking point and stabs her mom, and is sent away. 3y
Maddy.Horne Pt. 7 - Years later Rex ends up dying of a heart attack , and five years after his death Jeannette and her second husband host a family dinner for thanksgiving. 3y

This memoir follows Jeannette Walls‘s upbringing in her strange and dysfunctional family unit. Jeannettes family never stays in one place and is constantly moving around due to her dad, Rex Walls, who suffers from paranoia and alcoholism, and her mom, Rose Walls, who craves excitement. Moving from her current home to Nevada, then Phoenix, then Welsh. Along the way Jeannette shares multiple gruesome stories about her experiences- rest in comments

Maddy.Horne Summary continued -including being launched out of a moving vehicle, fleeing a burning hotel room, being jumped by a group of girls outside of one of her schools, riding in the back of a packed moving van, and many others in a short amount of time. 3y
Maddy.Horne Themes Part 1:The heavy themes of this novel are poverty, family, abuse/neglect, and importance of education. The theme of abuse present in the story because of the experiences that Jeannette shares with the reader about. She‘s living in a chaotic environment where she and her siblings are often forced to take care of themselves. 3y
Maddy.Horne Themes part 2: Her parents put them in dangerous situations for example, Jeannette is unsupervised at the age of three and allowed to cook, which leads to her being set on fire. She and her siblings are often promised things that are never followed through fully, like her dad stopping drinking. 3y
