This book's illustrations are so cute, I can't stand it! Esther Averill's Cat Club books are definitely something I would've loved as a kid.

The fact that I read this book in a couple after-midnight reading sessions only added to its suspense factor! It was a quick read. I want to read more. I have more ?'s than answers. I look forward to more fiction by Iain Reid. For now, I'll be double-checking the dark spaces in my bedroom...
I've waited awhile to post a review for this read because I haven't honestly been sure how I feel about it. I was disappointed that the protagonist didn't seem thrilled with her job as a children's librarian (career goal!). Other parts were just strange & unrealistic. Still, I couldn't put it down.
I am so thankful to have a job that introduces me to new stories everyday. Only 40 pages in & I am spellbound by the grasp this book has on me. The ways Yaa Gyasi constructs images & emotions for the reader is so deep yet perfectly concise. I am anxious to keep reading!
"...some printed pages are medical plasters to extract pain, some are tourists' tickets out of boredom or loneliness..., still others are diplomas for getting promotion and drilling ideas into a quick-step." -Althea Warren, librarian & first director of the Victory Book Campaign (& career goals)
"I make too much of a mess of things. But books, [...] I do still believe that books can save you."
As a fan of the movie (yes, I watched it before reading the book), I was pleasantly surprised. There is plenty of content not included in the film, making this an enjoyable & timeless read that I couldn't put down! This is a book I could see myself reading over & over.
