Silence of the Lambs | Thomas Harris
Mehso-so

While a bit obviously dated and sometimes written harriedly in an attempt to communicate panic, this book is a good example of successfully building suspense and shifting perspectives. Was surprised that the book took care to emphasize that the villain was not trans, when the movie only had one offhand line.

A lovely validating book about humans understand each other and themselves, with stark realism about the oppression that trans people face in history and present day. Gonna be thinking about this one for a while

Excellent takedown of anti-fat bias in American culture. If you think the author is peddling a misinformed point, don‘t worry, she‘s got over fifty pages of notes, scientific study references, and indexing at the back of the book. :)

“The typical Anarchist, then, may be defined as follows: A man perceptible by the spirit of revolt under one or more of its forms, — opposition, investigation, criticism, innovation, — endowed with a strong love of liberty, egoistic or individualistic, and possessed of great curiosity, a keen desire to know.”

A refreshing read on food, as well as the scientific and cultural places it holds across several societies. It‘s a read for anyone who finds themselves constantly confused by nutritionism and the ways their food is marketed to them.

A criticism I do have is that in a post-2016 world, this book often adopts a tone of “what They don‘t want you to know!!” Luckily this attitude that often comes off as smug is outweighed by being heavily sourced.

Thinking about this excerpt a lot.

A Plague of Demons | Keith Laumer

Definitely takes care to keep from being boring. It‘s a James Bond story, but also in space with super powered spy technology and demon dogs with dope masks. A little pulpy near the middle to the end for my tastes, though.

The Lathe Of Heaven: A Novel | Ursula K. Le Guin

A fantastic exploration of utilitarian ethics in a sci-fi, post apocalyptic setting. It‘s like this book was made with me in mind, nearly twenty years before I was born. I adore this story.
