It's an interesting novella. I wasn't as engaged with it as I was Black Sun, but I'll likely pick up the sequel to see where the world building goes.
It was the devil's hour on Aventum Angelorum, Goetia's own high holy day, and there was a black wind blowing off Tabor's mine. It slithered down the mountain past the places where the old gods of the continent had once held sway.

pickThe easiest way to describe this novella is “murder mystery in an Old West town populated by descendants of angels & demons.” Roanhorse‘s world building is excellent as always & while the mystery itself is straight forward, the story resonates with thoughts about loyalty, family, perception, right/wrong, & how far we‘ll go to protect someone we love. This world begs for more stories & Roanhorse says she may return to it in the future. Yes please!
pickThe only “bad” thing about this story by Roanhorse is that it‘s a novella — I wanted more! The Elite and the Fallen live together in Groetia, but in very different areas. Both are descendants of those that fell to Earth after the War of Heaven. Celeste and Mariel are Fallen, and sisters. Mariel has been charged with the murder of an Archangel; Celeste feels duty bound to save her. Great story. Angel politics!
pickThis one hurt. I thought I was reading a fantasy murder mystery western romance and it is, but it‘s really about the people we‘re closest to and how we try to make them into who we need them to be.
pickI love her writing. She can build a complex world so quickly! This short novel did not give me enough time to get invested in the characters. That said I will read anything Rebecca Roanhorse writes.
