I was also pleased that Perez depicted minority characters dealing with economic and societal struggles that were often stereotypically assumed to be "dumb" or unintelligent as very smart and capable. 8y

When we chose this book for Nov. FYABC, we had no idea how apt it would be. We hope everyone is surviving the election results and fallout. Let's start the book discussion. #fyabookclub #novfyabc

1. This book deals with harsh racism and bigoted attitudes. How did you feel about Perez's use ofthe period's racist language?

BookNerdBritt It's always jarring for me on a personal level to read or hear certain slurs, but it's part of the context of the story. I wouldn't go as far as to advocate for using them, but I certainly don't fault the author for using them as a vehicle to show the ugliness of the attitudes toward people of color. 8y

skullsinthesea Agreed. To me, it felt authentic, because people certainly did speak that way, but that jarring feeling carried throughout the book. I thought she did it well, because it always stung--I was never desensitized. 8y

BrandiNB I agree that using such terms leant authenticity to the story. I think she did a great job of using language authentic to the time period, but making clear that it was NOT OKAY. While I wouldn't say that I would advocate for the use of racial slurs, I think the book might have been less impactful without them. 8y

skullsinthesea I'll start! Hi, I'm Jennie from FYA. I really love to cook (the more complicated and ridiculous, the better), but I also find cross-stitch pretty soothing. (I probably wouldn't love it if I were forced to do it! I love that photo going around of the sampler, reading "Edith-Anne made this in 1848 and hated every stitch.") 8y

SeeStephWrite I'm Steph, and I'm a member of SFFYA. I wish I were half-decent at sewing, but I'm terrible at it. I do love knitting however; it's soothing and rewarding, and I love seeing things materialize before me like magic. I also love cooking and baking, though I prefer one-pot meals to fancy feasts. There's something so satisfying about cooking for myself though. 8y

Nothing feels like chore with her around. I am YA obsessed (I hardly read anything else) and I can't wait to start "Out of Darkness." I've heard such good things! 8y
