Belly Up | Stuart Gibbs

I just finished reading this book to my 8-year-old son, Niko. So, since he knows I write, he wanted to get in the action.

I asked him some questions about the book and his answers are unedited below.

Did you enjoy the book?
Yes, I loved it.

Who was your favorite character?
Summer McCracken and JJ McCracken.

Do you have a favorite quote from the book?
What‘s a quote?

Like when JJ said shut your pie hole.
Yes.

“Boo!” cried George.
“Have mercy!” screamed Martha.
Martha and her stamp collection went flying.
“I‘m sorry,” said George. “I was feeling wicked.
“Well,” said Martha. “Now it‘s my turn.”
“Go ahead,” said George.
“Not right away,” said Martha slyly.

I always forget how funny Marshall‘s books are. Have mercy!

SayersLover Oh yes! These are still one of my favorites and my nephews and nieces love them too. So timeless! @Aimeesue 1y
Aimeesue @SayersLover I was giggling the whole time I spent re-reading them. So amused ❤️ 1y

Aimeesue @jlhammar The thought of a hippo screaming “Have mercy!” continues to crack me up. 😂 1y

I loved the premise of this story and the characters. However, there were so many characters introduced in such a short novella that none of them really got the depth they deserved.

TieDyeDude I read the collection American Hippo, which has the two novellas and a bonus short, so I felt like I had a little more time in the world, but it is so unique I wish there were more! 1y

I loved this story just as much as the first! And the way everything came together at the end was *chef‘s kiss* perfection! I‘m going to be thinking of this alternate history that could‘ve been for a long, long time. 🦛

This was SO MUCH FUN! A great caper, some may say. I absolutely cannot wait to read the sequel. 🦛 What wonderful characters and twists to the plot!

(2018) Here's two novellas and a couple of short stories set in an alternate 19th century America where hippos inhabit the Mississippi. They're basically western capers with hippopotamuses and an inclusive cast. They're light and a lot of fun.

I enjoyed this part even more than I did the first one. Peter Berkrot is reading this audio book as well and he does a formidable job. His voice just adds to the atmosphere in the story, a mix between swamp feeling and western. This series is one of my favourites by Sarah Gailey so far. And I can only recommend reading the short story “Worth her weight in Gold“ as well, if you like these books.

This book was strange, funny, and awesome! What if a crazy idea that was floated in by a US government official in the 1890s to introduce hippos to the Mississippi river as a meat source (true story) had been adopted? It would be this book. A rip-roaring read filled diverse characters, wit, and delightful criminals. Loved it!! And great on #audio. #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks
