I loved the premise of this story and the characters. However, there were so many characters introduced in such a short novella that none of them really got the depth they deserved.

pick(2018) Here's two novellas and a couple of short stories set in an alternate 19th century America where hippos inhabit the Mississippi. They're basically western capers with hippopotamuses and an inclusive cast. They're light and a lot of fun.
pickI enjoyed this part even more than I did the first one. Peter Berkrot is reading this audio book as well and he does a formidable job. His voice just adds to the atmosphere in the story, a mix between swamp feeling and western. This series is one of my favourites by Sarah Gailey so far. And I can only recommend reading the short story “Worth her weight in Gold“ as well, if you like these books.

What if a crazy idea that was floated in by a US government official in the 1890s to introduce hippos to the Mississippi river as a meat source (true story) had been adopted? It would be this book.
