#NovemberNarrative Day 18: this lovely picturebook about an Asian American girl won the New Voices, New World contest as it captures the experience of ‘honoring a mixed heritage‘, the sense of pride in celebrating family traditions, and the comfort and joy of being home, surrounded by loved ones with lots of #Hugs. What makes a Monday better? Dumplings and fried noodles from Din Tai Fung.

Who would have though a Michelin star restaurant would be in a mall?! It is so yummy!

I also stopped by the Amazon Bookstore and picked up The Testaments. I really didn‘t want to buy it from them but my local bookstore was out.

We had a xiaolongbao (soup dumplings!) making class this morning and we made pork and mushroom dumplings! We were the only two in the class. It was so fun 🥟 and we ate all of these 😋 while chatting with CiCi, our wonderful teacher, about Shanghai, motherhood, education, academic pressures, chopsticks, marriage, independence, and travel. Most dumplings were steamed but some got fried up and topped with sesame seeds + green onions. YUM.

This book was strange. I felt it was very disjointed and had some strange ideas. For example, the author claims that In the USA we call all kinds of dumplings “rav” (short for ravioli) and I have never in my life heard anyone anywhere in the states ever use that term, and neither have any of the people I asked about it. Super short and argues that anything dough like is a dumpling. I disagree. Dumplings should be round!
