Like his other collection of essays, A Long Desire, Connell‘s follow up is another highly entertaining and witty exploration of history, archaeology, exploration, culture and science. While a bit dated (1980), I‘d still consider it a must read for anybody wishing to delve into an easy introduction to a wide sweep of the human experience. Btw, the White Lantern refers to Antarctica as it reflects more light into space than any other Earth feature.

Day 14 - Relaxation

I had a relaxing break away in Cumbria, among the lakes, forests and hills.

It looks like @jenniferw88 had a great time in Kefalonia. Thank you so much for my postcard. It was a lovely surprise.

What's your ideal method of relaxation? 😌

The principal person in the book I‘m reading for #Mexico, Miraflores, was 100% indigenous, of Aztec origins. So I‘m starting the tagged book by reading about the Aztecs. #readingtheAmericas @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle

BarbaraBB You are really deep diving with the challenges. You‘ll become an expert on Latin America, just as you became one on Africa, Asia etc! 👍🏽 2y
Librarybelle Totally agree with @BarbaraBB ! 2y

This is my most exciting, and sadly most expensive, book I bought today. Fortunately a sizable Christmas gift from Mom funded my purchases today (thanks @Doll8455 !).

I wish I‘d had this book through all the continent reads I‘ve done, but I do plan to read it all. It‘s only 137 pages. But I specifically bought it for #readingtheamericas. It will work for #Guatemala #Mexico and #Peru and probably more. I‘ll add relevant countries as I read it.

Librarybelle Awesome! 2y
azulaco I want this. I have an atlas of the Classical Greek and Roman world, but I‘d love to have this. 2y
BarbaraBB So many ancient civilizations in Latin America have build the continent and its culture. This must be an interesting book! 2y
batsy That looks so interesting! 2y

The Sumerians, the pragmatic and gifted people who preceded the Semites in the land first known as Sumer and later as Babylonia, created what was probably the first high civilization in the history of man, spanning the fifth to the second millenniums B.C. #mysteriesbooks #samuelnoahkramer #sumerian #cuneiform #anunnaki #anu #enki #enlil
