I'm really enjoying the Kate Shugak series, so I thought I'd give this one a try.
While I'm sure it's not fair to compare the two series, I must admit that I would give the Shugak series the edge. While this first in series was fine, I did not connect as well with the main lead. I found Liam Campbell's a bit naive, a bit immature for his age and just a bit unlikable at times. All of that said, I would be willing to give the second

robinb book a go as I believe sometimes the first in series can be hard for an author getting characters, background, place setting, etc. set up and still be engaging enough for a reader.

All in all, a decent start. 4/5⭐️

This installment had me laughing out loud for a good chunk of the story.
Kate finds herself working as a roustabout for an oil company in AK. As much as she‘s conflicted about the environmental issues, she can‘t walk away from the money offered to shut down a drug ring that‘s causing havoc and even death. After she arrives she also discovers artifacts are being stolen and sold for an exorbitant profit. She finds herself unexpectedly enjoying 🔻

robinb her time there…good food, new/mostly nice folks, a different locale. Also, on her time off she stays with Jack, her lover. But as she spends time in a city and finds herself being “spoiled” at the base camp, she begins to miss her isolated cabin, her alone time and her self-sufficiency. Even though this one was not as action-heavy as some prior outings, the humor and more focus on Kate‘s personality/thoughts were a welcome addition. Well done. 4.5 1mo

Two old women of the Gwich‘in band, one of 11 distinct Athabaskan groups in Alaska, are left behind in a particularly harsh winter to die because the People believe they are a burden&move on to find food without them. While the women rely on each other&the skills they learned when they were young, they also revive their strengths. This is a story about believing in your strength, respecting your elders¬ accepting defeat. Loved it
