pick4/5 - when a book makes you love its central characters and then has horrible things happen to them…and that makes you very sad, anxious or angry….is that a sign of a good author? i liked this book and its characters but the suffering they go through - it was almost too much. it did make me want to see alaska!

pickMy #bookspin this month was a historical fiction about the exploration of the Wolverine River through Alaska, the first successful trip by white men.
While the exploration part was interesting, I preferred the other part of the story is about Sophie, the wife of the lead explorer. She is left behind near Seattle, and finds a new interest in photography of birds and nature, in the days when the art of photography was new.

pickI liked the first book in this series enough to buy this one and I think I liked this one more. It takes up where City Under One Roof ends and we get to spend more time with characters, especially Ellie, I liked from the first book; the narrator/voice for Ellie is the best, reminding me a bit of Mags Bennett from Justified.
