I was surprised at what a pageturner this was, though I do tend to love epistolary novels. There's a smidge of a mystery element and a smidge of suspense, but mainly it's a portrait of a somewhat cantankerous woman nearing the end of her life, who discovers that it's not too late to create stronger relationships, help others, allow herself to receive help and resolve some of the question marks that have haunted her. Not soppy, just really moving.

Wow, that packed a punch! I flew through this beautiful epistolary novel, with tears in my eyes for the last 20 pages. I have a lot to say about the book but I think it would be better for you to go into it without a lot of preconceived notions. It‘s not a long book but it‘s one that will stick with me. 💗💗

DrSabrinaMoldenReads Is it sad? 1mo
LiteraryinPA Aspects of it are sad, but I didn‘t find that my primary emotion while reading it. @DrSabrinaMoldenReads (edited) 1mo

You could use this story to teach students about historical events or as an introduction in how to write and address a letter.

The illustrator uses line work to point out main themes in the pictures. I noticed that as the linework got bolder and darker the more scared the main character felt. As the linework was more flowy the more at ease the character felt.

shawnmooney @DrSabrinaMoldenReads I'm sure that must be true. 😎 The novel didn't end up working for me in the end, so I didn't finish, but it started out great: Dominion by Addie E. Citchens 3mo

Loved this one. Sybil Von Antwerp communicates through letters: to her family and friends, a troubled young man, a professor, and several authors. We see her personality through her correspondence. At 73 she expects her life to continue being the same as it has been, but life has some surprises for her yet. Highly recommended.
