I enjoyed Naspini‘s book Nives, so when I saw this while in London I grabbed it. The story in this is a difficult one - a young man finds out his father is responsible for the murder of several young woman and of keeping a girl locked in a storage container for 14 years. The story bounces from points of view but some reactions and behaviours in the aftermath of this just do not strike the right note, particularly the ending. #europacollective

My February stats. Proud Shoes was the highest ranked, but the tagged book is so important right now.

Beautiful writing, without any sensationalism or exaggeration, telling what it was like to live through 1943 & 44 in Italy, first far enough from the fighting to be considered a safe place to evacuate children, then literally the front lines. Fleeing at a moments notice, on foot, with 4 infants, 23 children under 10, and various adults. Dealing with partisans, fascists and Germans, all armed, all wanting to take whatever food, clothes etc.

Lcsmcat And thought it all she works on saving lives, while the fate of her extended family is unknown. Highly recommended. #letterW #litsyatoz @Texreader 5mo

Rome in May of 1943. Would that I can be that sanguine!

When the police hang up on a drunk teenager who claims to have found a body, Massimo Viviani, the owner of Bar Luma, accompanies him to confirm the existence of the body and gets drawn into the investigation due to the incompetence of the chief detective.

A not very interesting story, not helped by the fact that a lot of the time that for me at any rate it wasn't clear who was talking in the conversations. I won't be continuing in this series.

Wine and books. Hmm. I like the social aspects of this idea. A place to hang out, read and 🍷. My brain goes straight to spilling the wine. https://youtu.be/mBYn_l8Ik5A?si=33ZVgruFxAqYVHGs

Pickpick

This has a completely far-fetched premise and a fairly predictable plot, but it was charming nonetheless—a quick read and a nice change of pace in the middle of a lot of heavier, longer, more drawn-out books on my list lately!

This nonfiction book, which depicts daily life in a small Italian village during WWII, is quiet but moving. And important.
