#NostalgicNovember
blurb
Susannah

I am suspending my #NostalgicNovember posts after I saw tonight how toxic nostalgia (for a time that never really existed) can be.

I am so ashamed. And I am aghast at the hatred that is currently the driving force of my country. Every hyperbolic statement rings true tonight: What will become of us?

Notafraidofwords I have never been this frightened. 8y
LauraBrook I feel the same way. I heard through the grapevine that one of my oldest friends has been spewing hateful, uneducated crap on FB (I'm not on FB), and that's been making me the most sick and afraid. It's a scary time. 8y

Grease: fotonovel eli tuokioista koottu kuvaromaani | Bronte Woodard, Allan Carr, Michael Newman
post image

I had forgotten about this book until I stumbled across "Grease" on TV last night. It was my very favorite movie from the first time I saw it (at age three or four) until I was 10 or 11. And I had this "fotonovel" well before I could read the cartoony captions on all the pictures. Still such a fun movie, though I have to ask myself what all those Noo Yawk greasers were doing in southern California? ??#NostalgicNovember ?❤️??

thegirlwiththelibrarybag And why the t-birds were so old? 😂🤔 8y
Susannah @thegirlwiththelibrarybag It must be because they're such hard livin' teenagers (except for Sandy, of course). 😆 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag 😂 very hard living! 8y

I found this book in my elementary school library when I was 12. It was my introduction to Greek mythology, and I loved it even when the pronunciation of the names proved nearly impossible (Purse-uh-phown? 🤔). I still have two or three copies of it floating around my house, and I think it's a great primer for anyone interested in Greek mythology--or anyone who loves adventure stories. #NostalgicNovember 📖❤️👧🏻

The Witch of Blackbird Pond | Elizabeth George Speare

Remember grade school book fairs? Cobbling together a few dollars to buy the books you *had* to have? I always associate this book with book fairs. I didn't actually read it until I was in my thirties, though, and what I missed! I was so impressed by the story and the faith the author put in her young readers' ability to understand the challenges of being an outsider in a world of superstition and fear of the unknown. #NostalgicNovember 📖❤️👧🏻

LeahBergen I had this very edition. ❤️ 8y
Susannah @LeahBergen After I finally read the book a couple of years ago, I went looking for this edition-- because it's the one I always remembered--and bought it online. 🤓 8y
Nutmegnc I loved this book as a kid! What a great story! 8y

Anne of Green Gables | L. M. Montgomery
post image

Like many pre-teen girls of the 1980s, I discovered Anne Shirley via the Anne of Green Gables miniseries, originally shown on "PBS WonderWorks" here in the US. I loved this book (though at the time I loved the show more and shared my VHS tape of it with all my friends), and I wanted to have red hair, a bosom friend, and a Gilbert Blythe so bad! Come to think of it, I can't say I feel so different now. #NostalgicNovember ?❤️??

Susannah I started listening to the audiobook version of Anne of Green Gables on the way to work this morning. It's so comforting to listen to an old favorite. And it's still so good! 8y
angrylilasian Yes! The original series cast the characters so well I know see them in my head when I (re)read the books. 8y
Lindy I led an adult book discussion of this at the library two years ago. First-time readers and rereaders alike commented on the sophisticated language. Some were surprised it was considered a children's book. (At original publication, there wasn't that kind of reader age distinction.) 8y
Susannah @angrylilasian Oh yes. I always hear the sharp voice of the actress who played Rachel Lynde saying, "Her HAIr's as red as "CARRots!" It was *such* a good show. (edited) 8y
Susannah @Lindy We should be so lucky as to have less separation among book categories today! 🤓 8y

Superfudge | Judy Blume
post image

Superfudge was my first Judy Blume book. My aunt and uncle bought me this exact edition was I was four? five? I remember that I couldn't read it on my own yet, but when I could, I did read it--and loved it. While it wasn't my favorite Judy Blume, it was a perfect start for a new reader. I'm so lucky to have been introduced to her before my own reading life even began. #NostalgicNovember 📖❤️👧🏻

Miss Nelson Is Missing! | James Marshall, Harry Allard
post image

A few months ago, @Readaholics posted about Miss Nelson Is Missing, and I started thinking about all the books I read and loved when I was young. So today, I'm kicking off #NostalgicNovember, a challenge I've set myself to add at least one post every day this month about the books I remember from the first ten years of my reading life. 📖❤️👧🏻

Reviewsbylola Yesssssssss loved this one! 8y
