Finished it yesterday night. Really enjoyed it. Since l'm more of a speculative fiction reader then a romance reader (l'm not at all a romance reader, actualky) l enjoyed the part in Northanger more then the part in Bath, but both were great.
Isabella was a lovely detestable character 😄

Mdargusch Great photo! I really enjoyed this one by Austen. 🙂 6y

Maybe because l'm not at all a romance reader, l'm enjoying the part making fun of gothic fiction a lot more than the part making fun of romance. Though l have to say both are well worth reading.

I love the way Cathrine assumes so many things on the base of her gothic reads 😂

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I really enjoyed that detail! 6y

I was trying to finish Northanger Abbey for the #NorthangerAbbeyReadalong #JaneAustenReadalong (for which l'm hopelessly behind) when l suddenly realised that l should really start the second book for the #BookAWeek challenge.

Let's see whether l can read a bit of both today

Daisey Both great books! 6y

It's been YEARS since I've read this one and I'm squarely putting Catherine Morland as my second favorite Austen heroine. Her love of great novels, care and solicitude for her friends, her plain way of speaking and confusion at misleading social cues all speak to me. And the sass and cleverness of Henry Tilney makes him 😍🔥😍🔥 I'm so happy at her happy ending.

sammisho Catherine reminds me a lot of you! Although I still don't think you are nearly as socially awkward as you think! 6y
LoverofLit @sammisho I think Catherine probably isn't either. It's mostly all in our heads! ☺ 6y
Linsy She is fantastic! 6y

I always forget how much I enjoy this book. Novel-loving Catherine Morland is an heroine after my own heart. Dramatic, excitable, and a sense of impending doom. I love the underlining commentary on romance novels, not much has changed in 200 years. Jane is deliciously snarky, and it's delightful.

Mdargusch This was a great Austen! 💗 6y
CoffeeNBooks One of my favorites! 6y
LoverofLit I'm loving this one too. I think I relate to Catherine more than any other Austen character I've met. She doesn't pick up on silly social cues either and worries of causing offense with her actions always. And yes, I'm loving the defense of novels in this! So true and reflects the times 💕 6y
JazzFeathers Reading it for the first time and really enjoying it. Though l think l'm a bit late in the readalong... 6y

This is the story of Catherine Morland. She is invited by family friends to Bath, and the novel tells of what happened there and afterwards.

I don‘t remember Bath being so important in her other novels, here we really get to learn a out the daily life during the season.

We also meet two of Austen‘s most manipulative people, and I wanted to yell at them so many times

ravenlee There‘s a fair bit about Bath in Persuasion, though not as much. 6y
AnneCecilie @ravenlee I think I just noticed it more in this novel, maybe because of all the balls and socializing? 6y
ravenlee Bath is a huge part of Northanger Abbey, for sure. It‘s a smaller, but still important, aspect of Persuasion (my favorite, and a recent reread). Jane Austen disliked Bath and that‘s pretty clear in Persuasion. I haven‘t read S&S or Mansfield Park, but P&P doesn‘t have Bath at all, I don‘t think. 6y
jenniferw88 Northanger Abbey is the book for Bath - P&P, Sense and Sensibility, Emma & Mansfield Park don't feature it at all. You'll find Mansfield Park features Portsmouth a lot though. 6y
AnneCecilie @ravenlee @jenniferw88 Most if the time when authors of the classics talk about the season, naturally they expect their readers to know what they‘re talking about. In this novel I feel like Austen is letting the reader know what is actually happening. So that the next time the season is mentioned, I‘ve a better understanding of what the characters are actually doing. 6y
