It‘s #jolabokaflod Day! Thank you so much Mikala. Book is perfect and the Cadbury‘s 😋 Such a nice idea. Thanks for organizing Chelle. To both, may sweet content be yours.

A beautifully written book, full of one man‘s journal entries narrating his obsessive search for, and observations of, wintering peregrines in the marshy fenland of eastern England. Baker‘s keen eye teaches us patience and discernment, where we slowly learn to pick apart the beautiful patterns that underlie every wildlife scene: an activity so meditative and captivating, its hard to wrench yourself away as dusk falls at the end of each entry.

3⭐️ I love J.A. Baker‘s writing here.. his detailed observations and the landscape descriptions are lyrical, coming from someone who was obsessed with the peregrine. He followed the bird from Oct to Apr for 10 years that he and the bird became one thing. The journal entries are repetitive, and it requires perseverance to finish the book. As a friend of mine said, 5⭐️ for the writing, 1⭐️ for the reading experience 🪶

Breakfast with this fantastic book

LeahBergen Beautiful! 😍 2y
batsy Backdrop looks amazing! Perfect spot for this book, I'm thinking... 💙 2y
sisilia @batsy It is, indeed…. Too bad I dont have the audiobook as a companion. It‘s narrated by David Attenborough… perfect! 2y

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 255.

Yesterday I bought a copy of The Peregrine and then went online to see who had recently written about it. The New Yorker ran an article in 2017 http://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/the-beauty-of-j-a-bakers-the-peregrin... and after reading that, I was reminded of Derek Walcott because he was referenced in the article. And then I spent a couple of hours this morning reading some of Wolcatt‘s poetry - which is amazing. #bookishsidetracks

vivastory I see that Werner Herzog blurbed it too! 4y
LauraBeth @vivastory he gave such a great interview explaining why he loves it so much: https://www.ttbook.org/interview/werner-herzog-peregrine 4y
vivastory I'll have to check that out! Thanks for the link 4y
Suet624 I love that kind of dive. 4y

#bookreport #hiselderliness
Brought Dad lunch today and got a book report. Braving It - interesting but why would you take your daughter to a place like that and risk her life? (Shakes head in disbelief)
Grunt - I like this author but I can‘t go to sleep after reading about people getting bits blown off. DNF
Falcon Thief (rec from @Cinfhen ) - very interesting. (I pressed for more detail) I have to keep moving while my pies are still warm. ⬇️

Centique He did add “the problem with good books is I stay up too late. And then I haven‘t finished but I have to go to bed so I grab something to stick in it. Paper or something. Today I opened a book and found a note saying Ring Robyn. So I forgot to ring Robyn.” Note to self: give Dad some bookmarks (edited) 4y
Centique Sorry about the lack of detail @Cinfhen but he enjoyed his mince pies! 4y
Ruthiella Would bookmarks really solve the problem? 😅 4y

Centique @Ruthiella it‘s questionable! 😂😂 4y
LeahBergen Come on, do you blame him? It‘s mince pies! ❤️❤️ 4y
Centique @LeahBergen ooh I just thought - some people might think Christmas mince pies - these were beef mince pies. 👍 4y
LeahBergen I assumed it was minced beef. 😆 In Canada, we generally call the Christmas mince pies “mincemeat tarts” (although my American friends don‘t really know what those are, usually 😆). 4y
Centique @LeahBergen it‘s amazing how often Canada has the same terms as Aus and NZ - that British influence! We just call them all mince pies and get my kids very confused. 😂 4y
AlaMich Great reviews by His Elderliness as always! 😂 4y
batsy Ahahaha! Warm pies are a priority 💜 4y
Cinfhen I‘m just delighted by this entire post and exchange....please clarify the difference between mince pies and Christmas mince pies....I‘m Jewish, American and totally confused xxx 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I don‘t understand the difference either. #americanproblems 4y
Reggie Lol, yeah, I am also mince pie clueless. If there ever was a cozy post. This is it. 4y
Cinfhen All this talk of pies is making me VERY HUNGRY @Reggie @Megabooks 😋 (edited) 4y
TrishB Hubby loves mince pies (for the sake of this thread- the Christmas ones!) Beef mince pies we would just call a beef pie 🤷‍♀️ 4y

This is perfect for fans of "The Feather Thief". I was fascinated by that story and listened to the audiobook of this one which was incredibly similar but a different underground trade altogether. This time, the author investigates falcon collectors. It's amazing how selfish and ridiculous people can be when it comes to animals and using them for their own gain. Drives me over the edge. This is a nonviolent #truecrime.
