In Praise of Shadows | Jun'ichiro Tanizaki
post image
Pickpick

Japanese award winning writer Jun'ichiro Tanizaki pens a classic series of essays that is reprinted reflecting the culture post World War 2. Commenting on Japanese life after a natural disaster, he examines the transformation of western modernization of traditional versus cultural values, art, food, and architecture of the Baby Boom period. An interesting perspective of a hidden society of that time!

I can‘t believe I didn‘t read this before now. Virginia is magnificent. I heard that this was one of the first true feminist essays and it was awesome. She was witty and powerful. I loved the slightly sarcastic tone but also the way she demonstrated how the patriarchy has challenged and molded woman and our expression. The historical comparisons of woman in the arts with dogs is infuriating. A must read for anyone who calls themselves a feminist.

Leniverse My favourite Virginia Woolf. It's still so relevant as well, because even though a lot has improved women still do most of the emotional labour. Men can get themselves a man cave or shed in the garden without anyone batting an eyelid. Rarer for a woman to be able to carve out that space for herself if she has children. 1mo
SarahBookInterrupted @Leniverse I completely agree! 1mo
TheBookHippie This is still my favorite of hers. I adore her writing. 1mo

Sparklemn I read this years ago. May be time for a re-read. 1mo
SarahBookInterrupted @TheBookHippie this is my first read of hers and definitely won‘t be the last. I don‘t know what I was waiting for. 1mo
SarahBookInterrupted @DrSabrinaMoldenReads that‘s sounds very intriguing. Is there a book recommendation you can make for the diaries. I would be very interested. 1mo

My constant companion for #HyggeHour readathon. Although I've never had his furry beans in my face before. 🐾
I had a very relaxing hour, listening to the tagged and sipping a delicious winter spiced tea.

Pickpick

This is an interesting collection of reflections on human connections, written in the context of the COVID 19 pandemic. I didn't find his observations on inequality and the wider world particularly original (maybe that's a little harsh), but his insights into his creative process, his mental health struggles and his life experiences generally were really illuminating.

My apologies. I forgot to post November's read.
Our November read is VW's 1929 extended essay on the writing, creativity, and the need for women to have financial freedom and self-determination.
Three guineas is her essay on gender differences and inequalities.

I went walking on Friday in my neighborhood on my favorite walking trail. I wrote about it in the Journal app on my phone and took pictures of these birds that I saw.
