30 book recommendations in 30 days...

Day 30: Let's end the 30 days with a very intense yet very powerful and important novel. Again, it is fiction, but really allows people to get inside other lives and perspectives in a way I think we all should. It is *tough* stuff, so pretty much any content warning you can think of applies. #30recsin30days

CuriousG Content warnings for: forced residential schools, forced restrictions on cultural customs and language, abuse, harmful ongoing colonial issues, childhood sexual abuse, sexual abuse, poverty, intergenerational trauma, drug use, self harm, suicide, and more I've probably forgotten. Basically most things. 1y

Day 29: Can't believe I'm almost at the end already and I'm having so many issues narrowing things down! Figure I might as well do a fun one though. For any fans of The Princess Bride movie, this is an amazing look into the process of making it. You will have so many random fun facts to share with friends. I adored this on audio. #30recsin30days

Day 28: Near the end, but still have dozens of books I could easily choose from. This was a great audio listen. Another good one for Canadians to read/expand their understanding of Indigenous experiences. Yes, it is fiction, but sometimes being in a character's head is what we need to connect/learn, and this is very much consistent with any non-fiction I've read. #30recsin30days

Day 27: Another profoundly meaningful book, based on the author's experiences working within a hospice environment. #30recsin30days

CuriousG @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks thank you! I thought the way the light came in the window suited the book well 😊 1y

Day 26: A dark, bizarre, and yet somehow extremely addictive read. If weird and uncomfortable reads are your thing, this one is for you. #30recsin30days

AmyG Strangest story I have ever read. 1y
rachelk I‘ve had this on my bookshelf for decades and haven‘t read it yet 😬 1y
CatLass007 I read this years ago when it was first released. Definitely a strange story but I enjoyed reading it. I think I remember reading something about a sequel. 1y

CatLass007 Or maybe not. 🤷‍♀️ 1y
CuriousG @CatLass007 If there is a sequel I've never heard of it, but I would totally be in for it! 1y
CuriousG @AmyG it's definitely up there on the strange factor! 1y
CuriousG @rachelk I'm pretty sure I had it sitting on a shelf for a few years before I read it. It's an impossible one to explain the appeal, but strange in a super interesting way. 1y
rachelk @CuriousG Ok, I‘m now moving it up my tbr out of curiosity 1y
CuriousG @rachelk hope you like it! 1y

Day 25: As a person who decided by the age of 25 to get my tubes tied and not be a parent, I have heard the choice referenced as all of the things in this title, when in fact it is anything but as it allows me to give more of myself to my students. I didn't connect with all the perspectives in this, but they were all valuable and I think it should be required reading for everyone. #30recsin30days

Day 24: An amazing memoir. Truly horrific injustice and a situation that demonstrates so many of the issues within the criminal justice system (and society in general), which would reasonably have made most people angry, bitter, and set on revenge, or just plain lashing out. Yet Anthony Ray Hinton was able to retain hope, goodness & light, and we all could learn from him. Great on audio. #30recsin30days

Day 23: A whimsical, yet at times a bit dark, magical story. I listened on audio and I feel this was the best choice for this book - the narration was masterful. There are no good comps for this book, it really just needs to be experienced. Content warning for minor discussion of suicide (not graphic or prolonged). #30recsin30days

Day 22: A fascinating read. There was so much to think about and how complicated life must have been for every single individual in this family. I read it awhile ago so I can't remember the exact content warnings to give, but I remember that abuse was involved in some way, along with the significant mental health concerns, and other very difficult topics as well. #30recsin30days

Day 21: Again, difficult to read, but I feel it is so valuable, especially for Canadians. Knowing that the effects of colonization, residential schools, the 60's scoop are not in the past, is something we all need to be aware of. This book really helps you understand that our Indigenous communities (and especially youth) are still vulnerable & in pain. We need to do better. #30recsin30days
