Some of the women in this short story collection are intriguing. But most of the characters are stereotypical and flat. Most of the stories end abruptly with no closure and, sometimes, no plot. The glimpses of Indian and Middle Eastern culture were interesting, but not explored deeply enough. If these stories had been fleshed out more, the characters would've had room to grow and develop, rather than appear as mere shadows on the page.
