Let's Hear It for the Deaf Man
Let's Hear It for the Deaf Man | Ed McBain
4 posts | 4 read
First it was the strange phone calls, then the bizarre photographs. The boys of the 87th Precinct knew their arch nemesis, The Deaf Man, was back in town. Even a gruesome crucifixion and a cat burglar who leaves live kittens as his calling card could not keep Carella, Ling, Hawes, and Brown from the torment of the Deaf Man's riddles. And time was running out.

I have been working my way through this series for about a year (only halfway through!!), and my favorites are definitely the ones with the deaf man - so clever! Genuinely enjoying the 87th Precinct.

Also keep forgetting to post my time for the #WideHorizonsReadathon!! Finishing this book put me at 9hrs 1min - still behind for my goal, but we spent a lot of time yesterday painting new bookshelves, so I can't complain too much!! 😁

rabbitprincess This is my favourite 87th Precinct novel, and I have that same edition 😊 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Rabbitprincess - I have been reading the whole series in batches of five in published order, and it's been so much fun! I love McBain's wry sense of humor, and it was especially prevalent in this one. 5y
Emilymdxn That‘s still an amazing total! I do so badly at tracking times for readathons it‘s so easy to lose track 😕 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Emilymdxn - Right?? I'm not awesome at it. I do better now that I have a stopwatch instead of trying to do it on my phone, which I invariably reset at inconvenient times! 5y

1. Tagged.
2. The Blue Castle, which was a reread. For new reads, I think it was A Man Called Ove.
3. Honestly nothing comes to mind. I don't watch a lot of tv or movies, though.

#BookReport - Read the tagged books, read one chapter of The Angel's Command before deciding it wasn't for me, and also read a not-pictured ebook, Some Kind of Wonderful, about which I had very mixed feelings. Now I'm in the midst of my next batch of 87th Precinct books, which I've been reading in groups of five whenever I feel like it. The tagged book is my current read and brings back my favorite villain from this series.

I find the recurring Deaf Man storyline a little out of place. So much of life in the 87th precinct is steeped in grimy realism, but the Deaf Man is a continually failing Moriarty wannabe. Here, there is a spat between a medical examiner and paramedics as to who should be responsible for taking down the body of a crucified murder victim. Meanwhile the Deaf Man taunts Carella with clues to his crime, clues which end up defeating the whole caper.
