I got a box of materials in the mail for my teaching job this summer, and these are some of the books we'll be reading! Has anyone read these? What did you think? 🤓

thebluestocking Both Cricket and Henry were on the Battle of the Books list for this school year. I ended up reading Cricket. I thought it was just okay, but my kid liked it quite a lot. (I was bummed that of 10-12 characters only one minor character was a woman.) 6y

smilingshelves The Cricket in Times Square was always my first read aloud of the year to my fourth graders when I was teaching. They always loved it! 6y

Buechersuechtling You guys, maybe this is out of place because it‘s out of topic but it seems that you are the right bunch of people to ask. What is this teaching in summer all about❓ In the book I just finished which played in the U.S. the protagonist had to go to summer school. I figured it‘s for all those who failed the exams and otherwise would need to repeat a year. But if this is so where is the summer vacation for the teachers who give those lessons❓🤔 6y

Rachel.Rencher @Buechersuechtling Some regular school teachers can sign up to teach "summer school" where they get paid a little extra and help students catch up so they don't have to repeat a grade. Most teachers do take their summer vacation, though, unless they want to extra cash. I personally wouldn't want to deal with summer school because it's basically passing out packets and monitoring trouble children. What I'm doing this summer... 6y

Rachel.Rencher Is teaching at a reading institute where parents sign up their kids for a 5 week course to improve their reading skills, words per minute, things like that. Adults can also sign up for critical analysis classes where I teach them how to interpret and analyze nonfiction works. 🤓 6y

Buechersuechtling @Rachel.Rencher 🤗 Thanks a lot for the fast and detailed answer. If I recall from my English course correctly summer holiday in the U.S. is about three months so that five weeks of summer course don‘t seem to mess up the complete summer. Which maybe I would‘ve thought a cool thing as a student. 6y
