The Plague and I
The Plague and I | Betty MacDonald

Tuberculosis. A terrifying word, as terrifying then as cancer is now. It meant entering a sanatorium for treatment, leaving her family, her children. And what if she did not recover? Hardly the basis for comedy, one would suppose. And one would be wrong. Betty MacDonald always had the ability to face up to adversity -- and heaven knows she had enough in her life! -- so after the initial shock had passed, she proceeded to laugh at her illness, the other patients, the nurses, the doctors, and -- chiefly -- herself. Humor was her greatest medicine, right up to the day she left the sanatorium, cured. Of course she had her bad moments when despair and tragedy underlying what she saw and heard refused to be pushed into the background, but she had the grit and wit to rise above it. The result is a lively, cheerful and most funny book. In fact, it's a tonic.

Bedtime reading this week. TB - the Worst!

mabell I haven't heard of this one! Isn't she also the author of 6y
quietjenn @mabell she is! She did four comic memoirs altogether. This is the second one, about her experience getting tuberculosis and staying in a TB hospital. 6y
mabell I'll have to keep an eye out for her others. They sound really entertaining! I just gave the Egg and I to my mom (a backyard chicken farmer 😊) 6y

I loved Mrs. Piggle Wiggle as a child and can even remember exactly where these books were in the public library near my home as I often dashed straight for them in 2nd grade. I am about to embark on my first encounter with Betty McDonald's adult books. A warm blanket and a cup of tea in hand, I need this rest today.

quietjenn Oh, I just bought this! 7y
Sapphire It's on the front table of Literati in Ann Arbor and they talked about it on their blog. 7y

Really interesting seeing inside a tuberculosis sanitarium from the viewpoint of a patient and discovering the strange yet funny people, habits, and treatments inside. The narrator of this audiobook was perfect at changing up the voices and keeping the humor high. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

rubyslippersreads So excited these are back in print. I have Anybody Can Do Anything, but not the others. 😺 8y
Bookdodger I adored Ma and Pa Kettle! Found The Egg and I in Alpine, Texas years ago and loved it. It, too, was made into a movie with Fred McMurray and Claudette Colbert--and, of course Marjorie Maine and Percy Kilbride. 8y
