We Kept Her in the Cellar
We Kept Her in the Cellar: A Novel | W. R. Gorman
3 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
There are always two sides to a story. This dark and twisted reimagining of Cinderella, told from her stepsister's POV, is perfect for fans of T. Kingfisher and Naomi Novik. Eunice lives her life by three simple rules: One, always refer to Cinderella as family. Two, never let Cinderella gain access to rats or mice. Three, never look upon Cinderella between the hours of twelve and three a.m. Cinderella has dark and terrifying powers. As her stepsister, Eunice is expected to care for her and keep the familys secret. For years, Eunice has faithfully done so. Her childhood flew by in a blur of nightmares, tears, and near-misses with the monster living in the cellar. But when she befriends the handsome Prince Credence and secures an invitation to the ball, Eunice is determined to break free. When her younger sister, Hortense, steps up to care for Cinderella, Eunice grabs her chance to dance the night awayuntil Cinderella escapes. With her eldritch powers, Cinderella attends the ball and sweeps Prince Credence off his feet, leaving behind a trail of carnage and destruction as well as a single green glass slipper. With Cinderella unleashed, Eunice must determine how much of herself she is willing to sacrifice in order to stop Cinderella. Unsettling and macabre at every turn, this page-turning horror will bewitch horror fans and leave its readers anxiously checking the locks on their cellar doors.

5⭐
What a surprise this was, I think it‘s my favorite Cinderella retelling ever. It was wildly imaginative.
The narration by EJ Lavery was quite good.

A horror-twisted fairytale retelling of Cinderella, as told by one of her “wicked” stepsisters?! I could barely contain my excitement for this one!! Eunice, the same age as her new stepsister, is hardly looking forward to another sister (or a new father), but after a disastrous first introduction, she becomes a quick study in the rules for being near Cinderella. With fun nods to the well-known versions & gruesome scenes, I couldn‘t stop listening!

Singout Interesting! One of the short stories in Chrysalis, which I just reviewed, is also a retelling of Cinderella. 3mo
TorieStorieS @Singout Ooo!! Checking out your review now!! 🥰 3mo

TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I had a really fun time listening to this one! It‘s a little gross at times, but still a fresh take on the story! I‘m excited to see what the author writes next! 3mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Plus, I‘m not surprised that you also love retellings and Cinderella!! We have the same great taste!! 🤣 3mo
JenlovesJT47 Lol so true 💁🏻‍♀️😆 have you read any of the Disney Villains series? It‘s really good. I‘ve only read 2 so far, Maleficent and the one about Snow White‘s mother. There‘s one about Lady Tremaine from Cinderella that I hope to get to one of these days. This is the first one 3mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I have read a few, too— the Snow White one also, and the Ursula one but not the Cinderella one!But it is already in my wishlist! 🤣 3mo
JenlovesJT47 Of course! I‘m not surprised. And my TBR is out of control so I understand! 🤓 3mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Same, book twin, same!!!🤣 3mo

A Lovecraftian fairytale retelling. Definitely graphic horror.

You know the story but imagine the stepsisters being the victims of a monstrous disgusting evil shapeshifting putrefying creature.

Cinderella, a cosmic horror.

I loved Eunice and the description of the monster and the havoc she creates.

Spooktober is looming. Great story to add to your TBR!!

This fairytale made me smile. 🤷🏼‍♀️
