"Raised a warrior in the harsh winter country, Ryo inGara has always been willing to die for his family and his tribe. When war erupts against the summer country, the prospect of death in battle seems imminent. But when his warleader leaves Ryo as a sacrifice -- a tuyo -- to die at the hands of their enemies, he faces a fate he never imagined. Ryo's captor, a lord of the summer country, may be an enemy . . . but far worse enemies are moving, with the current war nothing but the opening moves in a hidden game Ryo barely glimpses, a game in which all his people may be merely pawns. Suddenly Ryo finds his convictions overturned and his loyalties uncertain. Should he support the man who holds him prisoner, the only man who may be able to defeat their greater enemy? And even if he does, can he persuade his people to do the same?"--Back cover.

I largely enjoyed this book. YA Fantasy with plenty in it for Adult audiences to enjoy. It is basically the opposite of Grimdark and I think lot of people would enjoy a fantasy adventure which is refreshingly free from cynicism. I think it goes a touch too far in the opposite direction for my taste and feels a little naive. I think the plot is good and the worldbuilding largely successful with a note on the Lau that I'll include in a comment.

deirdrebeecher In this book the Lau feel less successfully worldbuilt than the Ugaro. As the series goes on it becomes apparent the Lau are a European style society with black skin. In the depiction of European style armies RN wants to show how women were a vital part of the cog of war but she didn't want to get into how rapey those armies were. So she fudges.

As the series continued I enjoyed books based on the Ugaro and disliked those based on the Lau.
