Guilty Creatures
Guilty Creatures: Sex, God, and Murder in Tallahassee, Florida | Mikita Brottman
6 posts | 8 read | 12 to read
From the critically acclaimed author dubbed one of todays finest practitioners of nonfiction (The New York Times Book Review), a breathless true crime tale of sex, religion, and murder in the deep South. Mike and Denise Williams had a tight knit, seemingly unbreakable bond with childhood friends, Brian and Kathy Winchester. The two couples were devout, hardworking Baptists who lived perfect, quintessentially Southern lives. Their friendship seemed ironclad. That is, until December 16, 2000, when Denises husband Mike disappeared while duck hunting on Lake Seminole. After no body was found, everyone assumed that Mike had drowned in a tragic accident, his body eaten by alligators. But things took an unexpected turn when, within five years of Mikes disappearance, Brian Winchester divorced his wife and married Denise. Their surprising romance set tongues talking. People began wondering how long they had been a couple, and whether they had anything to do with Mikes death. It took another twelve years for the truth to come outand when it did, it was unimaginable. Now, the full, shocking story is revealed by Mikita Brottman, acclaimed true crime writer of the enthralling (San Francisco Book Review) An Unexplained Death. Through tenacious research and clear-eyed prose, she probes the psychology of a couple who killed and explores how it feels to live for eighteen years with murder on the soul. A fascinating page-turner of modern noir, Guilty Creatures is destined to become an instant true crime classic.

I can‘t remember which #Litsylove friend recommended this to me, but I‘m excited to dive in since I grew up near Tallahassee and worked here for years.

Kind of boring. No big reveals or anything. No insight into how these people think - how they justify murder instead of divorce or how they act like a normal married couple going to marriage counseling when obviously what's wrong with their marriage is that they committed murder to make it happen!

⭐️⭐️ People are not rational beings. Too godly for divorce but not murder. Make it make sense. This isn‘t lengthy, but still a slog for me. I just didn‘t care about the story. Everyone was awful. The pretty cover got me. #coverlove

Ruthiella Yeah, I don‘t get the divorce is worse than murder logic… 2mo

Mikita Brottman has a talent for finding and telling the most unbelievable true crime stories. Her other books were more philosophical and poetic. This tale is the literary equivalent of a Polar Pop or Big Gulp. Buckle up for raunchy crimes among evangelicals, sex addiction, life insurance, and gators! 🐊🥤🔫

Damn this true crime is juicy! Adultery, sexual possession, murder, alligators - has all the right elements!

Mike and Denise have been friends since high school with Kathy and Brian. When Brian and Denise start sneaking around, they get the idea to stage Mike‘s death as a hunting accident and collect on the insurance policy Brian sold him. They manage to cover it up for several years until all hell breaks loose and they turn on each other.

I knew nothing about this, but I found it quite interesting. And kind of crazy that Brian and Denise could do such a good job of convincing themselves they‘d done nothing wrong. God-fearing and all… sure. I was focused when reading and was happy to just continue reading; it was unfortunate when I had to put the book down. But, life…
