Above the Fire
Above the Fire | Michael O'Donnell
1 post | 1 read
An enthralling debut, Above the Fire crystallizes the relationship between a father and son as they survive a winter of isolation. Perfect for fans of The Dog Stars by Peter Heller and The Road by Cormac McCarthy.Laboring under a shared loss, Doug and his young son, Tim, set out on a late season backpacking trip through the White Mountains of New Hampshire. They find beauty and solidarity in the outdoors, making friends along the trail and falling into the rhythms of an expedition. But when reports of warfare and social collapse reach the ranger station, Doug--seeking to protect the only family he has left--withdraws even further into the backcountry. The alpine winter presents its own dangers, as father and son must endure the elements, the solitude, and the ever-present threat of outsiders. As their isolation intensifies, and the nature of the country's disorder becomes more unsettling, their bond with each other grows more fierce. But as spring approaches, they must decide whether--and how--to confront the perils of a changed world.

It‘s 150 degrees outside today with NO wind, so we stayed inside. We also don‘t go to the beach on holiday weekends because it‘s nuts outside. So, we went and got a pineapple smoothie and enjoying this book about hiking. In the snow. In New Hampshire - NOT in Tampa🤣

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It‘s so hot here too!! 🥵 6mo
Scochrane26 Guess I‘ll prepare for the heat when I‘m down there in June. I‘ll be at the beach & was expecting it to be very hot. 6mo

Kappadeemom @Scochrane26 which beach you going to? Some days are worse than others - depending on the humidity and if there is wind. The beach is usually good because of the breeze and being able to get in the water. Just unusually hot today because there was no breeze. I think it was 93 6mo
jewright We live so far from the beach, at least a 12 hour drive, so I‘ve only seen the ocean twice in my life. I wish we could go more often. 6mo
Scochrane26 @Kappadeemom I‘m flying into Tampa. Visiting a friend in Brooksville so planning to stay in that area & drive to beach. I‘ll probably go to Clearwater, but I‘m not familiar with other beaches in her area. My 3 full days will be June 27-29. 6mo
Kappadeemom @Scochrane26 make sure you take a boat ride over to Honeymoon Island and visit the sponge docks at Tarpon Springs! Clearwater Beach is beautiful but crowded - if you drive down to Madeira Beach or Indian Rocks it‘s a little less busy. Have fun while you here! 6mo
Scochrane26 @Kappadeemom Thanks for the info! Those sound fun. 6mo
