Bestselling and award-winning author Andrew Joseph White returns with a queer Appalachian thriller, that pulls no punches, for teens who see the failures in our world and are pushing for radical change. A gut-wrenching story following a trans autistic teen who survives an attempted murder, only to be drawn into the generational struggle between the rural poor and those who exploit them. On the night Miles Abernathysixteen-year-old socialist and proud West Virginiancomes out as trans to his parents, he sneaks off to a party, carrying evidence that may finally turn the tide of the blood feud plaguing Twist Creek: Photos that prove the countys Sheriff Davies was responsible for the so-called accident that injured his dad, killed others, and crushed their grassroots efforts to unseat him. The feud began a hundred years ago when Miless great-great-grandfather, Saint Abernathy, incited a miners rebellion that ended with a public execution at the hands of law enforcement. Now, Miles becomes the feuds latest victim as the sheriffs son and his friends sniff out the evidence, follow him through the woods, and beat him nearly to death. In the hospital, the ghost of a soot-covered man hovers over Miless bedside while Sheriff Davies threatens Miles into silence. But when Miles accidently kills one of the boys who hurt him, he learns of other folks in Twist Creek who want out from under the sheriffs heel. To free their families from this cycle of cruelty, theyre willing to put everything on the lineis Miles? A visceral, unabashedly political page-turner that wont let you go until youve reached the end, Compound Fracture is not for the faint of heart, but it is for every reader who is ready to fight for a better world.

5/5 ⭐

Like in other A. J. White's books, through all the blood and hurt what stands out the most is the deep love between the characters - flawed characters written in a way that makes me feel so close to them.

Really interested in the main character but I couldn't take the awfulness of the situation.

Fantastic! Taking place in rural West Virginia, a trans-autistic teen has to stand up and fight for the right of himself and his family and friends as the bad apple of the small town‘s sheriff‘s department continues to live and act above the law. Things begin to get out of hand as this thriller turns to murder and gore. I asked a colleague today if she‘s read it to find out it‘s her current read. Can‘t wait to discuss it when she finishes 😊

The scariest thing about Andrew Joseph White's work is how real and gritty real life can be. In a highly politicized mining town in Appalachia, a trans teen must combat the heavy violence, governing corruption, and extremist views plaguing the community and long standing historical feud between the struggling and the wealthy. Guiding him is an ancestral spirit that will force him to face his deepest fears in this teen/YA novel

AJW has taken us to: an eco-Christofascist apocalypse, a Victorian asylum full of spirits and mediums, and now an Appalachia haunted by blood feuds and class war. This is his most unputdownable book yet, a bloody tour-de-force, mining and queering West Virginia‘s buried socialist history, with a lovable, neurodivergent, rage-fueled transboy at the center and a whole lot of gore all around him. Prepare to be hurt, haunted, and ultimately heartened.
