I love a coastal Maine setting. This was brutal; a detective is attempting to solve the mysterious death of a teen found at a historic park. There‘s a large cast of characters and flashbacks to the past. I liked it but it isn‘t one that‘ll stick with me. Also, this guy wrote women like a man is writing what he‘d love for a woman to act like but most do not actually think or behave this way lol.

This came across as an honest novel, from the portrayal of teenagers and their problems–large and insignificant–as well as their relationships with their parents, to the raw and rash behavior by their parents. I also liked the way in which Nichols chose to present the events. While a majority of the novel follows Alex and Isabel it also contains sections from the point of view of the killer, all without giving away the individual‘s identity.

This was such a thrilling novel that had me guessing after every page. This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time and I truly had no idea who the killer was until the very end. I loved this book so much and I really hope it will become a series because I would love to see what Alex does next.

This was a slow-burn mystery, more character-driven and atmospheric than action packed. I thought the pacing was great, and I couldn't read the last 50 or so pages fast enough. It's also so creepy, and has a ton of depth for a murder mystery, with great characters and realistic complex relationships. My only issue is that I knew who the killer was IMMEDIATELY. hat said, this was so much more than a whodunnit, so that really didn't matter.

There were some sections that were a little slow, but when things really got going it became an edge-of-my-seat mystery, I just wish it hadn‘t taken so long to get there. It was nice to have my suspicions about the killer‘s identity but still come across some surprises.

Granite Harbor by Peter Nichols

I've had a lot of firsts this year. First time reads that is. Another new to me author that I will be looking out for. This book was great.

This is a dark story but it has a lot of things that I didn't expect. From fear to laughter to holding my breath. Yes there is a serial killer out there murdering teen boys. Cutting them open. Yes the killer is evil to the core.

Set in Maine, this thriller oozes a sort of classic feel to it. English native Alex has shifted from novelist to detective as he worries over his teenaged daughter— all the more so when one of her friends is found at a the site of a historical reenactment settlement, murdered, with a toad inside of his corpse. The parental worries, alongside the nameless killer makes this a genuine page-turner! The characters and community all come to life!

Got this ARC and going to start it tonight.
