Good Taste: A Novel in Search of Great Food
Good Taste: A Novel in Search of Great Food | Caroline Scott
5 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
With delectable prose, a sharp heroine ahead of her time, and an adventure across the English countryside in search of great food, Good Taste is the perfect historical novel for fans of Dear Mrs. Bird and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. You can tell a lot about a person from what they like to eat...England in 1932 is in the grip of the Great Depression. Stella Douglas, author of a much-loved but not very successful biography, is a bit depressed herself. When she's summoned to see her editor in London, she expects her writing career is over before it's even started. But much to her surprise, she is being commissioned to write a history of English food. It's to be quintessentially English and intended to lift the sprits of the nation. There's just one problem: a lot of English food is actually quite terrible (and anything good is usually imported from elsewhere). So Stella travels across England in hopes of discovering a hidden culinary gem. What she discovers is oatcakes and gravy and lots and lots of potatoes. But when her car breaks down midjourney and the dashing and charismatic antiques dealer Freddie springs to her rescue, she is led in a very different direction . . .Full of wit, life, and--against all odds--delicious food, Good Taste is a story of discovery and one woman's desire to make her own way as a modern woman.

Finally finished this over the weekend. I‘ve been so busy lately it‘s been hard to make any headway. Main character is a little naive, but mostly likeable. The food descriptions and scenes were described well, but I did find it odd that she kept wanting to paint things. No real passion for this is ever mentioned until the very end, so why keep referencing it throughout? Overall, I found it a simple read without any surprises.

My book club will soon discuss this engaging listen! Well-performed and set across England in 1932, Stella has something to prove with writing her second book. After dismal sales with her first biography, her publisher suggests she write a history of food in England. Still fresh in her grief of losing her mother, and navigating her own relationships, this does eventually get there. Stella‘s choices are less than stellar but her arc is satisfying.

I‘m thrilled to report that not only did I complete my goal for #YearEnd #20in4 by reading 20 chapters in this book—but I ended up finishing the entire book! The readathon gave me the push I needed to finish this one.

Thank you for hosting, @Andrew65!

The last book I finished in 2023! I love food fiction and in this case, the main character is an author tasked with writing a history of English cooking. I loved all of the food, cooking, and recipes, and I really loved the historical info included about the English recipes. But the MC had a lot going on, and I got bored with all of the different dramas in her life. I struggled with a lot of the food, people, places, and pop culture references👇🏻

intothehallofbooks …but this made a lot more sense to me once I realized this book was published over in England a year ago. A cute story, will be most loved by more serious foodies or fans of British history and culture. Thanks to William Morrow and NetGalley for providing a digital copy for review. 11mo

I‘m joining the #YearEnd #20in4 Readathon hosted by @Andrew65!

My goal will be to read 20 chapters in the tagged book which will bring me to 3/4 thru it. (Actually, I‘d really love to finish it but having a goal is fun.) This is a NetGalley read that I‘m a little late on finishing. I‘m trudging thru it, likely because I‘ve been so busy at work and home lately. I tend to love books about food or cooking, so hoping this one will pick up for me.
