Women of the Fur Trade
Women of the Fur Trade | Frances Koncan
4 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Sometime in the 1800s, three very different women (with twenty-first century affinities) sit in a fort sharing their views on life, love, and the hot nerd Louis Riel. This historical comedy shifts perspectives from the male gaze to women's power in the past and present through the lens of the Canadian Fur Trade.

I‘m sorry that I missed seeing this play at Stratford, but the run had finished before I got there in September. It‘s a delightful read, in any case. A comical feminist history of the Red River rebellion in what is now Canada. Frances Koncan is Ojibwe and Slovene; and she has a great sense of humour. #IndigenouAuthor #CanLit ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I made stick puppets to act out a scene from the tagged play in my latest video:

EUGENIA: … Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada—

CECILIA: Lovely place!

EUGENIA: —a city known for simultaneously being the Murder Capital of Canada and the Most Racist City in Canada.

CECILIA: We‘re also the Slurpee Capital of Canada. Don‘t forget that.

BiblioLitten Slurpee capital!! 13mo

batsy Ah, Winnipeg... I thought I was imagining it but the locals would be drinking slurpees even in a blizzard 😂 13mo

Lindy @batsy Ha! Winter slurpee drinking comes up in Katherena Vermette‘s most recent novel, which is set in Winnipeg 13mo
Prairiegirl_reading I have lived in Winnipeg (and just outside) all my life and can confirm all three of these things to be true!! However, Manitoba just elected the first indigenous premier with a very diverse cabinet so change is happening. 😄 The slurpee thing will never change though. (edited) 13mo
