@TheBookHippie
This was an interesting pair that I read back to back.
I never realized the mom was the villain the first edition.
The True Story of Hansel and Gretel was a unique retelling set during World War II. It was dark, twisted, and disturbing. I'm still not sure how I feel about it.
TheBookHippie It‘s all fascinating to me. Look how differently it is portrayed as hundreds of years go by. 1y
tpixie Oh! Thanks! I forgot I had this book on my shelf. I‘ll have to read it!!! 1y
tpixie Yes. So do you think the mother was the mean lady in the house that they killed? And that‘s why the mother was dead when they returned home??? that‘s what I was interpreting it as I read it this time and I thought maybe I was making it up. .. 1y

tpixie @TheBookHippie @sblbooks someone else has the same question. I think we will never know.. https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/6630/were-the-witch-and-the-stepmother... and https://www.sjsu.edu/faculty/harris/StudentProjects/Student_FairyTales/WebProjec.... (edited) 1y
TheBookHippie @tpixie Oh how interesting!!! I was going to look it up when I got home parent teacher conferences tonight! So we will just go with we are probably correct!! LOL 1y
tpixie @TheBookHippie lol Yes!!! 1y
IndoorDame @tpixie @TheBookHippie I saw that connection too this time, and I think I remember reading that connection in the intro commentary in a previous version I‘ve read. But I also wondered if the writer doesn‘t feel the need to punish the mother as part of the moral. Like letting her live after she tries to kill the children wouldn‘t be socially acceptable? 1y
tpixie @IndoorDame that‘s a great point! 1y
