I have had the incredible opportunity to spend the past week at the actual Bird Hotel in Guatamala featured in this book. Not only is the author an incredible writer, but a genuinely wonderful person as well. If you ever have the chance, she does Memoire writer retreats, Spanish instructional retreats, and a retreat for learning about Mayan culture.

Loved this one 5 ⭐️. Life can be complicated, life can be simple. There is love, loss, tragedy, deception. Doing the things you love to do in a place you love with people you love is all that matters.

The tragedies of life! A woman finds herself in a magical place and tells of the people both good and bad that pass through the her world of healing.
As for appropriation, I‘m not a fan and I will not read an author that does so. This author in my opinion, writes from the perspective of an outsider. I don‘t care to argue or even discuss the latter, I am not in the mood.

This book is on one hand, beautiful, but also disjointed, in pieces, almost like a poem that tells a story. I need to let this marinate for a bit.

Stayed up late to finish this book that publishes today 😅I was really excited for a new Maynard but this one didn‘t quite meet my expectations 😬 As a child Irene experiences a great loss only to face more tragedy as a young woman. Feeling unmoored she finds herself in an ancient Mayan village where magic & rebirth await her. It was just wayyyy too twee for me & it was far too long. It just wasn‘t what I was hoping for 🤷🏼‍♀️#MoreMehThanYeah

It‘s a departure from her last novel which I LOVED; Count The ways. This one is a bit frothier with hints of magical realism 🪄
