3 posts | 1 read
The award-winning author of Re Jane makes her young adult debut in a funny, poignant, and powerful novel about a multicultural teen struggling to fit into her whitewashed school, her diverse Queens neighborhood, and even her own home as her family reels from the loss of her father. ...A dazzling YA debut...that is deep, real and scathingly funny. Gayle Forman, New York Times best-selling author of IF I STAY. ...brimming with insights while being un-put-downable and just plain fun. Simply brilliant!-David Yoon, New York Times best-selling author of FRANKLY IN LOVE Alejandra Kim doesnt feel like she belongs anywhere. At her wealthy Manhattan high school, her sper Spanish name and sper Korean face do not compute to her mostly white "woke" classmates and teachers. In her Jackson Heights neighborhood, shes not Latinx enough. Even at home, Ale feels unwelcome. And things at home have only gotten worse since Papi's body was discovered on the subway tracks. Ale wants nothing more than to escape the city for the wide-open spaces of the prestigious Wyder University. But when a microaggression at school thrusts Ale into the spotlightand into a discussion she didnt ask forAle must discover what is means to carve out a space for yourself to belong. Patricia Parks coming-of-age novel about a multicultural teen caught between worlds, and the future she is building for herself, is an incisive, laugh-out-loud, provocative read.

April 25, 2023 Do not despise YA fiction. I have been reading less YA fiction because I feel like I have outgrown it but this book was definitely something that I could relate to. It was a high school aged book about a senior named Alejandra Kim and her confessions as a Korean and Hispanic girl living in Queens, New York. She felt like she never belonged and "never felt right" because ppl would not pronounce her name correctly. 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

April 16, 2023 In the chapters after, Alejandra meets a longtime friend Billy Diaz, but his old nickname is Chivi. He just returned from the DR and they catch up. Then, in another chapter, Alejandra discusses the tragic loss of her Papí and how she wished she could have done more to keep him alive

April 16, 2023 Yesterday I decided to take a break and read a YA fiction book. When I was at Books Inc at Laurel Village, this book really called my name. I glanced at it and then REALLY read the synopsis. It was relatable and intriguing because it is about a senior in high school named Alejandra Kim who is disrespected and teachers mispronounce her name which leads to her friend Laurel writing up a petition to fire JBJ. But there is more...
