All Souls: A Family Story from Southie | Michael Patrick MacDonald
9 posts | 8 read | 5 to read
A breakaway bestseller since its first printing, All Souls takes us deep into Michael Patrick MacDonald's Southie, the proudly insular neighborhood with the highest concentration of white poverty in America. Rocked by Whitey Bulger's crime schemes and busing riots, MacDonald's Southie is populated by sharply hewn characters like his Ma, a miniskirted, accordion-playing single mother who endures the deaths of four of her eleven children. Nearly suffocated by his grief and his community's code of silence, MacDonald tells his family story here with gritty but moving honesty.

My Boston Bookhaul!!! I went on a short vacation to Boston to see Hamilton and my best friends. I‘ve been working on reducing my book collection (recently got rid of maybe 40+ books?) and told myself NOT to buy any on my trip. But.... I couldn‘t help myself! I was left alone for a few hours and this happened. Excited for all the true crime!

bookishkai Oooh, All Souls is SO good. 6y
NovelGirl82 You have a little package being sent from me this week! 6y

Day 7: #MemoirMonday

Loved this tale of a big Irish clan's coming of age in South Boston in the 60s & 70s. Plenty of heartbreak, but some hope, too.

The book portrays growing up poor and white in South Boston in the 70s and 80s. It‘s a very interesting read and it details how groups of poor people are constantly pegged against each other.

Not sure I can give this memoir a proper review. It‘s a painful history lesson and a love story of South Boston, Southie. It covers the riots in the 1970‘s when desegregation took place, the reign and resultant devastation of Southie by Whitey Bulger, police corruption, the strength and despair of his mother, poverty, the death of four of his siblings, and his activism in gun buy-back programs. Won the American Book Award in 2000. #MountTBR

This book was so powerful and sadly semi relatable. It's the true life of a poor Irish Catholic family growing up in the projects of Southie. It covers all factors of race and socioeconomic issues, as well as police and government corruption. It actually explained a lot and put a lot of pieces together if things I have heard in the area from living here. These are the actually projects where most of the book took place.

Suet624 Reading this now. Grew up in Braintree. This book is providing a lot of history that I was unaware of. Not sure why I was so unaware! 7y
BostonBookAddict @Suet624 I was unaware as well!! It was very eye opening and put a lot of pieces together for me. I hope you enjoy it! 7y

I have jury duty tomorrow and need also need to start a new book. Which one will help me get out of it? A good title (The Verdict or The Story of a Sociopath), a local true life crime book (All Souls), a book I have been dying to read (The Alienist), or a book in the series I was reading (Under a Silent Moon)??

CocoReads I've only read The Alienist but it was solid. All those look great though 7y
BostonBookAddict @CocoReads it's been on my TBR forever and it keeps moving up. Especially since there is going to be a mini series on tv soon! 7y

Listening to this on Audible. I've read it 3 times over the past few years. Such a different experience to hear the author's words- and he is the one doing the reading.
