A man, by virtue of his profession, finds himself drawn into some of the darkest secrets of his time. These are the 1920s, when two major military-political groups are fighting in Bulgaria: the Military Union, the Democratic Alliance and the VMRO, on the one hand, and the United Front, on the other. Our hero is not a partisan of any of them, which allows him to see them relatively impartially. At the same time, he struggles with life as an ordinary person, and his account of urban life resurrects the frantic atmosphere of the 1920s. He could go on living like this, but his character slips him a little deeper into the shadows.
