Men I Trust
Men I Trust | TOMMI. PARISH
5 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
An original graphic novel about the messiness of modern relationships by one of the most exciting voices in contemporary literature. Eliza is a thirtysomething struggling single mother and poet; Sasha, a twentysomething living with her parents, dabbling in sex work, and yearning for direction in life. The two strike up an unlikely friendship that, as it veers towards something more, becomes a deeply resonant exploration of how far people are willing to go to find intimacy in a society that is increasingly closed off. Parrish's fully realised characters and gorgeously painted pages make Men I Trustone of the most moving and insightful works of fiction in any medium this year.

A very thought-provoking graphic novel. The art is a strange mix of surreal/abstract, with hyper realist backgrounds and people drawn with oddly out of proportionate heads and bodies and unnatural skin colours and changing hair. I felt like I didn't quite *get* what the art was doing. It‘s about two women who almost make a connection, but one of them being entitled and pushy ruins it. I really felt for the character who's a single mom.

There are zero trustworthy men in this gritty, moving and unsettling novel about a budding friendship between two lonely women. Single mother Eliza is recovering from addiction, and needy Sasha is even more of a mess. Complex emotions and colourful, surreal art make this LGBTQ graphic novel a rich reading experience. #OzFiction

Nonbinary comics artist Tommi Parrish painted every panel by hand in this graphic novel. Their style is surreal, creating bulky human bodies with large hands and tiny heads. Sometimes her hair colour might change from one panel to the next, yet I didn‘t have trouble identifying Eliza, one of the central characters. She‘s shown here at an AA meeting.

Men I Trust is a beautiful book – the illustrations are rendered to perfection in full colour, making it feel more like an art book than a graphic novel. It's also a moving and intense story, one that might have you staring off into the distance in a while after you‘ve finished.
