This is not a cheery read as it describes the Holdomor, a famine caused by Stalin‘s policies in Ukraine, in the early 1930s. The story is told from the perspective of Nyl, a Ukrainian boy, whose family stays on their farm instead of joining the collective. Focusing on one family‘s experiences, the author portrays many aspects of the horror of the situation, yet manages to end the story on a hopeful note.

I've been wowed by students' questions about the real history behind Winterkill and how it relates to Putin's war against Ukraine.
