Never Name the Dead | D M Rowell
6 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
Old grudges, tribal traditions, and outside influences collide for a Kiowa woman as forces threaten her family, her tribe, and the land of her ancestors, in this own-voices debut perfect for fans of Winter Counts. No one called her Mud in Silicon Valley. There, she was Mae, a high-powered professional who had left her Kiowa roots behind a decade ago. But a cryptic voice message from her grandfather, James Sawpole, telling her to come home sounds so wrong that she catches the next plane to Oklahoma. She never expected to be plunged into a web of theft, betrayal, and murder. Mud discovers a tribe in disarray. Fracking is damaging their ancestral lands, Kiowa families are being forced to sell off their artifacts, and frackers have threatened to kill her grandfather over his water rights. When Mud and her cousin Denny discover her grandfather missing, accused of stealing the valuable Jefferson Peace medal from the tribe museum--and stumble across a body in his work room--Mud has no choice but to search for answers. Mud sets out into the Wildlife Refuge, determined to clear her grandfather's name and identify the killer. But Mud has no idea that she's about to embark on a vision quest that will involve deceit, greed, and a charging buffalo--or that a murderer is on her trail.

I really enjoyed this book! I really liked learning some things about the Kiowa. Mud Sawpole is such an interesting character and I was very happy to see this is the start of a series. I definitely look forward to the next book in the series and the mystery that awaits!

I can't put my finger on why exactly this isn't working for me at the moment. It may simply be wrong book at this time.

This hits several of my interests-modern day Native American story set in Oklahoma. However, the beginning isn't capturing my attention and life is short.

Back to the library this goes and I'm picking up the next book!

Storytelling is in my blood
This is a tribal story about a tribal mystery. Mae is a Kiowa native born who finds herself thrust into not just a murder mystery, but one that shakes the whole tribe. A story of past and present traditions being a catalyst is deterring the future. I felt it. The closure left me a bit too open minded, but the story held me fast throughout its slow paced mystery of twists and turns. #ouabc had good gifts implemented

4✨ A story of fiction with ties to a real Indian tribe of the Kiowas. This mystery starts when Mud returns home after a decade when she gets a confusing and concerning message from her grandfather. I like that the author provides real insight to customs and appreciation of elements that are held dear to her tribe. While I was not always hooked to the story this was a great story. #OnceUponABookClub Dice was too cute laying there. 😍💛

New issue of Mystery Scene in my mailbox today! I‘m especially excited to dig into the section on Indigenous crime writers “Native Cultures, New Voices.” Really interested in the tagged debut out Nov 8.
