An island oasis turns deadly when a terrifying legend threatens to kill off visitors one by one in this haunting novel from the highly acclaimed author of The Girl from the Well and the Bone Witch trilogy. Pristine beaches, lush greenery, and perfect weather, the island of Kisapmata would be the vacation destination...if not for the curse. The Filipino locals speak of it in hushed voices and refuse to step foot on the island. They know the lives it has claimed. They won't be next. A Hollywood film crew won't be dissuaded. Legend claims a Dreamer god sleeps, waiting to grant unimaginable powers in exchange for eight sacrifices. The producers are determined to document the evidence. And they convince Alon, a local teen, to be their guide. Within minutes of their arrival, a giant sinkhole appears, revealing a giant balete tree with a mummified corpse entwined in its gnarled branches. And the crew start seeing strange visions. Alon knows they are falling victim to the island's curse. If Alon can't convince them to leave, there is no telling who will survive. Or how much the Dreamer god will destroy... Creepy and suspenseful, The Sacrifice is perfect for readers looking for: Spooky, scary books for young adults Horror novels Ghost story books for teens East Asian folklore Praise for The Girl from the Well "Solidly scary and well worth the read."Booklist "Chupeco makes a powerful debut with this unsettling ghost story."Publishers Weekly, STARRED review

This book gives you something to think about and is completely different from anything I‘ve read in the past … Alon is an islander that protects people from the Diwata … who or what that is is explained during an intrusion from a crew of Hollywoods actors and tv crew … as with all of Rin Chupeco‘s writings this is top of the list in originality … I love this read and know that any book by this author is a must read

I've been wanting to get into a Rin Chupeco book for ages now but kept falling asleep with the bone trilogy, but this book had me from the start, which is also weird because I'm not super big on horror. Everything was honestly so good, the characters, the monsters, the critique on Hollywood/media culture (among other things), and THE ENDING. I did feel a certain something was dragged out but I kind of also understand why it was so it's ok xD

This is the 3rd book I read, back to back??, where a parent is so obsessed with their deceased (or gone) partner that they neglect their kids, 2 of the 3 deciding even death is worth it and I'm just here like WHAT ABT YOUR KID?! I saw a tweet the other day saying that ppl only like the idea of kids and not kids themselves and I know this is fiction, but it's like I suddenly see it...everywhere? Or maybe it's a plot point?? Lol idk it irks me

coffees Btw I don't like kids which is funny considering I work in education but also I do think about things like this as the reason I'd never have kids, they would never be my priority which I think they should for anyone who has them, at least while they're still kids (yes, even -teens are kids) 11mo

Koimonogatari had me laughing and crying and being violent to my phone so I'm Awake, but it's time to settle down. I'll go to bed after listening to a bit of this :) #netgalleybacklog #joyousjanuary

I also started Odessa but that seemed like a heavy book (topic) so I'll finish it tomorrow

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 11mo

I‘d describe this book as “colonizers fuck around & find out”. A hidden island is said to be home to a sleeping god who needs 8 specific sacrifices to rise. Over the years people have tried and never gotten to all 8. A docu-series crew is on the island now with a local boy as guide who acts as a caretaker to the island. plant related horror &plot twists abound. people slowly losing it. & it‘s a surprise queer book with male/non-binary couple SLAY
