Nonfiction: A Novel | Julie Myerson
5 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
Two parents stand by powerlessly as their only child seems intent on destroying herself. Meanwhile the mother - a novelist - attempts to understand her uneasy, unresolved relationship with her own mother. Weaving between childhoods past and present, as well as a current narrative laced with temptation and betrayal, this is the delicate journey of a mother, daughter, wife and author struggling to make sense of her world. But can a writer ever be trusted with the truth of her own story? Clear-eyed, self-lacerating and at times frighteningly direct, Julie Myerson's latest novel explores maternal love as the emotional foundation we both crave and fear. A howl of fury, as well as a moving love letter from a mother to a daughter, this is a book about damage, addiction, recovery and creativity.

Pickpick

It‘s a thin line between fiction and nonfiction and when life is hard and you are a writer you might need to write fiction just to deal with reality. Or maybe nonfiction would be the way to tackle real life. I am not sure, but I loved this book about motherhood, although it was a harsh one. I felt for the mother (the writer) who has a daughter destroying herself and a cold, judging mother. She herself isn‘t perfect either - of course. ⬇️

BarbaraBB This is her story and although I am not sure what was fiction or nonfiction for the narrator (or Julie Myersson herself for that matter): it doesn‘t really matter. The message came through loud and clear. 6mo

Mehso-so

Slowly working my way through the library pile…. And now I wonder why I picked this one ahead of the others.

Nonfiction tells the story of an author who has a difficult relationship with her mother and her daughter.

I usually don‘t mind dark books with unlikeable characters but this was just relentless. Add to that the switching POV (a lot of it written in the second person) and the confusing non-linear timelines; just not for me.
