Deception at the Diamond D Ranch
Deception at the Diamond D Ranch | G. R. Stahl
3 posts | 1 read | 1 reading | 2 to read
Ranger Cade Rigens is working to establish the nation's newest national park in one of the most rugged and remote parts of the American West. On the cusp of a history-making public hearing, the park's most vocal opponent comes to Cade with news about a young man who went missing doing research in the mountains. Venturing into the wilderness with a political adversary as his guide is the least of Cade's problems. As he struggles to uncover what happened, he gets the attention of militant activists who stymie his progress and threaten his safety. As he gets close to unraveling it all, he discovers at the center a mystery as old as the region's settlement. Deception at the Diamond D Ranch is grounded in present-day political tensions about federal land in the West. It also draws on the story and heritage of Basques who moved to the West at the turn of the twentieth century to work as miners and sheep herders. Basque language, dance, traditions and stories dating to 6000 BC are thriving in the Intermountain West, and the central riddle in Deception at the Diamond D Ranch hinges on the lore and legends of this vibrant and influential heritage.

Couldn‘t put this one down. Perfect vacation read with a message that resonated . And I think it is going to be a series! Park ranger begins investigating disappearance of staffer researching mines in an area proposed for a park. Brings in the fascinating history and culture of the Basque people who immigrated to Idaho/Nevada to work with sheep and in mines. ⬇️

SamAnne Backdrop is the tensions between conservationists, ranchers and others, and the efforts by corporations to manipulate the U.S. right wing militias for their own purposes—to steal land from the public, ranchers, Native Americans. I have lived and worked in the world and the plot line is very believable. Gosh I hope it turns into a movie. 2y
Susanita I ordered this, and it arrived today! 2y
SamAnne Oh, can‘t wait to hear other reviews. I‘m close to the subject matter which certainly influences my review. But I especially loved the Basque element, a culture and history I know little about.‘although I always stop and visit the “Basque Block” when I‘m in Boise. 2y
SamAnne @Susanita interested in your review of it! 2y

Written by an old colleague of mine in conservation work who left his job to write. Excited for him & his first mystery! Features a Park Service ranger researching his employee‘s disappearance. Backdrop is Idaho desert canyon lands, a proposal for a New National Park, and the complicated battles between right wing militias, old ranchers, the Idaho basque community and conservationists. Have to admit—60 pages in and I‘m sucked into the story!
