Head On/Repossessed
Head On/Repossessed | Julian Cope
4 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Julian Cope's highly acclaimed autobiography and its long-awaited sequel in one extraordinary volume. Contents: * Julian Cope shot to fame with eighties band 'Teardrop Explodes' during the Punk era. Hailed as a visionary by those people who recognise his genius and a madman by those who find him perplexing, he has become a cult figure in the music world. * Head-On has previously only been available via 'Head Heritage' Julian's own company. Repossesed picks up in 1983 where Head On ends and continues up until 1989. Written in Cope's inimitable style it is set to provoke the same kind of media excitement. * When Julian Cope published 'Head On' in 1994 he received astounding reviews: Visceral, ballsy, bitchy, brutal, beautifully written. Book of the year. Made my heart burst. -- The Observer ...an enthralling saga of bitchiness, betrayal and unrepentent debauchery. -- The Sunday Times (Books of the Year) As a glimpse of the essentially pathetic but amusing whims and eccentricities that lie behind the screwed down hairdos of rock musicians, it's equally essential reading. And as a genital -warts-and -all diary of madmen, it is simply supreme entertainment. -- N.M.E Cope never portrays himself as anything less than a self-serving, childish, whinging half-assed failure. He's wrong, of course, but it makes for insanely funny reading. -- Select

Title: Repossessed by Julian Cope
Tune: Out of My Mind on Dope and Speed, from Skellington 1
I've read Julian's 1st memoir, Head On, which chronicles how his band The Teardrop Explodes imploded, for reasons not unrelated to this tag. Repossessed, which I'll try to read in July, continues his story in the aftermath and how he crawled out of the crater in the Rock God form of The Arch Drude

TrishB Oh great choice! Love a bit of Teardrop/Julian. Have got his serious non rock music books too. Well worth a read. He stopped singing to shout at me in a gig once. It was in Bolton Theatre and we had seats in the front row. Late because of trains and then I was heavily pregnant and needed the loo- so had to push past people to get to our seats. He shouted did I have an excuse for being late and I shouted - (edited) 1y
TrishB Yes I I‘m pregnant and had to pee!!! Going to have to give this a play now. (edited) 1y
Bookwomble @TrishB What a fantastic story! 🤩 I hope he accepted your reason and gave credit for dedication 😉 I'm listening through the three Skellington albums now, while I breakfast on Marmite Peanut Butter and cheese on toast and black coffee. Good way to start the day 😊 1y

TrishB He laughed and said fair enough! I was talking about it with my daughter this week as apparently Harry Styles did a similar thing- but obviously on a much bigger scale! I‘m saying nothing about that toast. 1y
BarbaraBB Great story @TrishB and glad to have this on the playlist! 1y
Cinfhen Ha!!! That‘s such a GREAT story @TrishB 🤰🙌🏻 1y
Cinfhen And another fabulous choice, Michael 1y

Julian Cope? The very same!

Shenanigans in Tamworth, Liverpool and North America involving music, drugs, marshmallows and faulty van air-conditioning. How Cope and Co. managed to produce any work at all is a mystery, somewhat explained in this interesting and frank account of the rise and fall of The Teardrop Explodes. You don't necessarily need to know or enjoy Cope's music to appreciate his story (but you really should👂🎶!).

New to this, thought I'd start with an old fave just finished re-reading. Cope's tales from his Teardrops days and beyond are hilarious, and very possibly true.

Possibly the best book(s) ever written or ever will be written about the UK punk scene during the mid 70's to late 80's.
