The premise sounded interesting and that's why I picked this one up but after sleeping on it, this was lackluster and I probably should have stopped reading it earlier.

Overall, I am saddened that this one played out how it did and my feelings towards it. The whole thing was lackluster, clunky, and had no direction. Shame because again the premise sounded promising.

3.5⭐️ This story had so much promise for me, but it lost me somewhere in the execution.

The Melvin/Bernadette/Kwesi triangle felt forced and underwhelming. The magic realism that was weaved into the story was so subtle at times that got completely lost for me.

I don‘t regret reading this, but I expected more.

Woke up at 3AM and did a Kindle deep-dive and came across this one…it has kept me intrigued. And can we talk about this beautiful cover? ❤️

1960‘s. This is the story of a couple that flees America to seek asylum in Ghana. It quickly turns into a cat & mouse chase, love triangle, crime story. This wasn‘t a favorite but crime stories aren‘t usually my jam.

Fleeing the FBI, an American couple go to Ghana. But it isn‘t as easy as they hoped, with the FBI on their tail and a country on the brink of a coup.

This book was okay, but I didn‘t like the small amounts of magical realism scattered in (some references to mermaids, a shapeshifting army, and a magic guitar) and the anticlimactic ending.
I feel like with magical/fantasy elements you need to go all in or just not bother 😂

Good! Really interesting premise and super fun to be in Ghana in the 60s and to have this magical realism as a theme. I could have done with a lot more detail. It was pretty short - only 6 hrs

This was a thriller (which I was on board with) with bits of magical realism (which threw off the story for me.)

A Black couple in Alabama find themselves in trouble when Melvin shoots a white gang leader in self defense. He and Bernadette flee to Ghana, where he has a friend in the government and hopes they can start their lives over.

They‘re followed by relationship turmoil and strange situations trip them up.

Pretty good, 3⭐️.
