Good Enough
Good Enough: 40ish Devotionals for a Life of Imperfection | Kate Bowler, Jessica Richie
3 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
A compassionate, intelligent, and wry series of Christian daily reflections on learning to live with imperfection in a culture of self-help that promotes endless progress, from the New York Times bestselling author of Everything Happens for a Reason In Kate Bowler's first book, Everything Happens for a Reason, readers witnessed the ways she, as a divinity school professor and young mother, reckoned with a Stage IV cancer diagnosis; in her second book, No Cure for Being Human, she discovered the ways life becomes beautiful and hard when we abandon certainty and the illusion of control in our lives. Now, in her first-ever devotional book, Kate Bowler offers 40ish short spiritual reflections on how we can make sense of life not as a pursuit of endless progress, but as a chronic condition. This book is a companion for when you want to stop feeling guilty that you're not living your best life now. Written gently and with humor, Good Enough is a permission slip for all those who need to hear that there are some things you can fix. And some things you can't. And it's okay that life isn't always better. In these gorgeously written reflections, Kate Bowler offers fresh imagination for how truth, beauty, and meaning can be discovered amidst the rubble and chaos of life. Her words celebrate kindness, honesty, and interdependence in a culture that rewards ruthless individualism and blind optimism. And ultimately, in these pages we can rest easy in the encouragement to strive for what is possible today--while recognizing that though we are finite, the life in front of us can still be beautiful.

4.5/5

I've enjoyed the other books I've ready by Kate Bowler, so I was excited to pick up this devotional. This is a beautiful devotional that doesn't buy into the idea that perfection is something that we can achieve, but that trying to be good enough is the goal. I loved the blessings and next steps at the end of each devotional.

I've got my January #bookspin list finalized, featuring 5 #newyearwhodis books from @Johanna414. I was hoping to finish Iron Widow and The Unexpected Fall in December, but with 24 hours left and 3 books currently in progress, I've accepted that those two will have to wait for January.
