El Corazon de Voltaire
El Corazon de Voltaire | Luis Lopez Nieves
2 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
The preserved remains of Voltaire's heart are kept in the National Library of Paris. How do we know they actually belong to the great philosopher? Roland de Luziers, genetics professor at the Sorbonne, is put in charge of the investigation. He never expected to encounter so many hurdles and surprises along the way. If he releases his finds, he will hit many raw nerves and reshape history. This award-winning novel is told through a series of emails.

Pickpick

@JaimitaPR went to pick up a friend at the airport, so we've been up since 3 am 😳 - on the plus side, I finally finished this charming novel about a geneticist's attempts to prove that the heart in France's National Library is indeed Voltaire's. Now I'm ready to discuss it with the student I tutor 🤓

BookishFeminist I'm pretty sure we are in the same time zone and I am still up & wouldn't have even tried to go to sleep before 3am 😂 this novel sounds fascinating! Do you know if it has an English translation? Or French? 8y
OSChamberlain @BookishFeminist I feel you! 4:30 over here and I'm starting book 2 of the book olympics 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @OSChamberlain YEPPP 😂😂 solidarity, friend. 👊🏼✊🏼 8y
quirkyreader I am sure many others will second this, some of the best books still haven't translated into English. And some of the English translations aren't done very well. 8y

Voltaire's Heart, a novel by Puerto Rican author Luis Lopez Nieves, is next on my list (for tutoring). I seldom read for pleasure in Spanish, my first language.

quirkyreader I hope it's a good story. This past week I got in an edition of Neruda's Cartara. So I have been grabbing sneak reads here and there. 8y
BookishMarginalia @quirkyreader I'm quite enjoying it so far. It's an epistolary novel for the 21st century: all email, all the time. I'm looking forward to seeing how the mystery of Voltaire's heart --and his alleged descendants-- unfolds. 8y
