The Devil May Dance
The Devil May Dance: A Novel | Jake Tapper
6 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
Charlie and Margaret discover the dark side of Hollywood in Jake Tapper's follow-up to New York Times bestseller The Hellfire Cluban "excellent" cocktail of corruption and ambition (Publishers Weekly). Charlie and Margaret Marder, political stars in 1960s Washington DC, know all too well how the tangled web of power in the nation's capital can operate. But while they long to settle into the comforts of home, Attorney General Robert Kennedy has other plans. He needs them to look into a potential threat not only to the presidency, but to the security of the United States itself. Charlie and Margaret quickly find themselves on a flight to sunny Los Angeles, where theyll face off against a dazzling world of stars and studios. At the center of their investigation is Frank Sinatra, a close friend of President John F. Kennedy and a rumored mob crony, whom Charlie and Margaret must befriend to get the inside scoop. But in a town built on illusions, where friends and foes all look alike, nothing is easy, and drinks by the pool at the Sands and late-night adventures with the Rat Pack soon lead to a body in the trunk of their car. Before they know it, Charlie and Margaret are being pursued by sinister forces from Hollywoods stages to the newly founded Church of Scientology, facing off against the darkest and most secret side of Hollywoods power. As the Academy Awards loom, and someone near and dear to Margaret goes missing, Charlie and Margaret find the clock is not only ticking but running out. Someone out there knows what theyve uncovered and cant let them leave alive. Corruption and ambition form a deadly mix in this fast-paced sequel to The Hellfire Club.

9-3-21: My 90th finished book of 2021! This is book 2 in the Charlie and Margaret Marder series. Early 60s, the Rat Pack, Scientology, the Kennedys, intrigue, murder. The Marders are back and investigating mob connections Sinatra has while being pulled into a deadly crime ring. This was a fun read and I hope CNN correspondent Jake Tapper continues with the series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍🏼📖#️⃣9️⃣0️⃣

I think this book suffered from timing for me… there were a lot of characters and I had a hard time keeping them straight… might of been better had I not read it as the school year is starting… overall not my favorite…

I really enjoyed the second installment in Tapper‘s Charlie and Margaret Marder series. Of course, it‘s far fetched with all of the fictionalized famous folk (Rat Pack! RFK! Sam Giancana! Janet Leigh!), but his references at the end gave me lots of NF follow-up to read later. Fun little escapist mid century page turner for what it‘s worth.

marleed I really have fun reading this series. I didn‘t realize it a series when I finished the first book so I was excited when the second book came out. 3y
Ericalambbrown @marleed me either! I liked Hellfire Club and when I heard he had a new one coming out I ordered it not realizing it was a sequel. I was so excited when I started reading it. 3y
marleed A few years ago my son posted an Instagram shot of himself working as the videographer at a celebrity charity event - Jake Tapper was in the background. I texted him writing: Jake Tapper! That‘s my newsman crush! …Little did I know at that same moment Jake walked up to my son to provide some production tips. And yes he read my text -lol! The next year - same event - I got a signed copy of The Hellfire Club!

Ericalambbrown @marleed I think I saw you post about that! That‘s awesome! 3y

How is a story about a pedophile ring fun to read? Well, with politics meets Hollywood in the time of JFK, RFK, the Ratpack, and yes, L Ron Hubbard - that‘s how. It‘s fiction, but helps you realize that with a good yarn a conspiracy is born.
...A few years ago I received a funny signed copy of The Hellfire Club when my son was the videographer at a charity event attended by Jake. In my fiction, Jake signs a copy of his new book for me too!

One of my favorite things about Tapper‘s books is his source listing at the back. While the book is fiction, his main characters inhabit a world alongside real people and events. Scientology came up and having just finished Bare-Faced Messiah a month or so ago, I recognized the references made in the story and flipped to the back. Sure enough . . . First book in the alphabetized list. I‘m about a third through and really enjoying it.

Texreader I absolutely love when authors do this in fiction books. 4y
Ericalambbrown @Texreader me, too! Tapper did this with his first book, too. It‘s only got 55% on here, but I liked it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 4y
