A simultaneously enduring and heartbreaking story of the love between a Jewish boy and a Protestant girl. Set against the backdrop of first the Great Depression then the Second World War, this story follows Molly and Max. As Max, a Canadian anew is deployed and taken prisoner in Hong Kong and Molly is left to hold the pieces together at home in Canada. I learned for the first time of the failed Canadian defense of Hong Kong. Interesting!

So this is not an epistolary novel. It's about a Protestant girl and a Jewish boy in Toronto who fall in love but who must face prejudice and go against their families' wishes to be together. But WWII starts and their lives are torn apart regardless. There is quite a bit of info about POW camps which is very interesting.
