Barely Functional Adult
Barely Functional Adult: It'll All Make Sense Eventually | Meichi Ng
7 posts | 6 read | 13 to read
A Hardcover Original From the creator of Barely Functional Adult, a painfully relatable webcomic with over 125k followers on Instagram, comes a hilariously poignant collection of beautifully illustrated short stories that chronicle the ever-evolving perspectives of your twenties on work, therapy, identity, heartbreak, friendship, and more. Wielding her trademark balance of artful humor, levity, and heartbreaking introspection, Meichi Ngs indisputably relatable collection of short stories holds a mirror to our past, present, and future selves. Featuring a swaddled, gender-neutral, Barely Functional Adult as its protagonist, who says all the things we think but cannot say, this book is equal parts humorous and heartbreaking as it spans a spectrum of topics including imposter syndrome, therapy, friendships, first loves, letting go of exes, and just trying to find your purpose in the world. Prepare to excitedly shove this book in your friends face with little decorum as you shout, THIS IS SO US! In this beautiful, four-color collection compiled completely of never-before-seen content, Meichi perfectly captures the best and worst of us in every short story, allowing us to weep with pleasure at our own fallibility. Hilarious, relatable, and heart-wrenchingly honest, This Book Is a Time Machine will have you laughing and crying in the same breath, and taking solace in the fact that were anything but alone in this world.

Meichi did an Instagram takeover an answered my question. (And she really does read to her frogs!)

They‘re African dwarf frogs, btw. And super cute!

MrsGagnonreads2024 Awww I had ADF they lived in a 10 gallon until they died of old age of 6 and 8 years old. 4y
Megabooks @Endowarrior21 in the book, she joked a bit about the inconsistent information about the lifespan of ADFs. She‘s had hers for years at this point. I can definitely see how they‘d bring a lot of joy. I had fish in college (mollys) and it was soothing. They even had babies and one lived! 4y
Centique @Megabooks I‘m loving the idea of owning frogs. Seeing as how my hub and I are pretty allergic to furry creatures - frogs might be a good idea! 4y
Megabooks @Centique apparently they‘re pretty easy to care for and hers have lived years. I can imagine they‘d be a fun alternative to the dander-producing options! 4y

This book was a warm blanket on a cold day. Reading Ng‘s words and graphics reminded me of everything that was wonderful and challenging from age 25-35. She taps into what‘s relatable about new pet ownership, first love, making friends as an adult, and getting your dream job, and what it‘s like when those things fall short or aren‘t perfect. I really love her voice.

This new release covers a lot of the ground of other millennial web comic/graphic novels (like Hyperbole and a Half), but I think this page pretty much sums up what was expected vs what happened after college. (I‘m an xennial, FYI, so I relate.)
