Kosovo
Kosovo | Noah Berlatsky
1 post | 1 read | 2 to read
This book explores genocide and persecution in Kosovo, including the historical and cultural background of long-running disputes between Kosovo and Serbia and other territories in the former Yugoslavia, particularly focusing on the 1999 war in Kosovo and the mass killings of Kosovo Albanians by Serbs. Readers are introduced to issues surrounding the 1999 war in Kosovo and the aftermath, including whether the atrocities committed by Serbs against Kosovo Albanians rose to the level of genocide. Personal narratives are from people touched by the events in Kosovo, including the story of a 10-year-old Albanian boy who lost his family to Serb violence, and a Roma woman who experienced persecution at the hands of Kosovo Albanians. Critical information is broken out and encapsulated into charts, timelines, and graphs.

Despite the fact that I was alive during the dissolution of Yugoslavia, I was not paying enough attention at the time to really understand what was happening. #ReadingEurope2020 has made me interested in learning more. This book is aimed at an advanced high school or early college audience, giving an overview of events in #Kosovo in 1999 and was exactly what I was looking for.

BarbaraBB I feel the same. This all happened about only 1,500 kilometers away from me and I knew but just went on with my life. I traveled across the Balkan in 2014. That was very confronting, as is this challenge. 4y
Librarybelle This sounds like a necessary read to better understand the 1999 war. I too do not remember much from that time. Thanks for posting about this one! 4y
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB There‘s definitely been some sobering reading in this challenge. I expect more of the same with Asia. I‘m about 80% of the way through my books, hunting for Asia titles and have a lot more countries than I thought! 4y
