Childhood, Youth, Dependency
Childhood, Youth, Dependency: The Copenhagen Trilogy | Tove Ditlevsen
10 posts | 7 read | 6 to read
Growing up in a working-class neighbourhood in Copenhagen, Tove feels that her childhood is made for a completely different girl. As 'long, mysterious words begin to crawl across my soul', she comes to understand that she has a vocation that will define her life. Her path seems assured, but she has no idea of the struggles ahead - love affairs, wanted and unwanted pregnancies, artistic failure and destructive addiction. As the years go by, the central tension of Tove's life comes into painful focus: the terrible lure of dependency, in all its forms, and the possibility of living freely and fearlessly - as an artist on her own terms.

Tove Ditlevsen was born in Copenhagen in 1917 and became one of Denmark‘s best known writers. Her memoirs, originally published in three separate books, are together in this compelling trilogy edition. The final book is about drug addiction, reminding me that this isn‘t a new problem. The audiobook, read by Stine Wintlev, kept me enthralled. Translation by Tiina Nunnally & Michael Favala Goldman.

Childhood is long and narrow like a coffin and you can‘t get out of it on your own.

marleed Ohhh, true. That could be a great first line of a horror story! 5mo
Lindy @marleed In fact, this memoir has some horror elements. 5mo

This books is amazing! She writes in a gripping style (real page-turner) but also with a fascinating sense of remove. The narrative is honest and brutal, and she doesn‘t reflect on her experiences through an adult lens. I want to read more over her stories

Poignant, funny and tragic - this is is the autobiography of Tove Ditlevsen, famous Danish writer. No legend or heroine. I really loved this book and loved The Faces - fiction.

This was a really fascinating and devastating read about life of Danish writer Tove Ditlevsen. It starts from her childhood through to her addiction riddled life. The last part Dependency is the most memorable and sad.

This is Ditlevsen‘s trilogy about her life

She was born in 1918, so she tells about growing up in a working class family and the different expectations on her older brother and her. The third book focuses on her marriages and her dependency on narcotics.

I didn‘t like the first book as much, I thought it lacked some details, but I got used to this as I read on. The strongest part for me was how easy it was to get addicted.

AnneCecilie I was also surprised by how little WWII influenced her life. She hardly mentions it at all. 3y
