A Joe Pickett novel from #1 New York Times-bestselling author C.J. Box. Joe Pickett's been hired to investigate one of the most cold-blooded mass killings in Wyoming history. Attorney Clay McCann admitted to slaughtering four campers in a back-country corner of Yellowstone National Park--a "free-fire" zone with no residents or jurisdiction. In this remote fifty-square-mile stretch a man can literally get away with murder. Now McCann's a free man, and Pickett's about to discover his motive--one buried in Yellowstone's rugged terrain, and as dangerous as the man who wants to keep it hidden.

Good book, good story. Number seven of the series. Story continues to develop and deepen while also straying in other connections. I enjoy reading about Joe Pickett and will continue.

I forgot about this series and this book reminded me why really. 7th book in the series and I doubt I'll be reading another Joe just annoys me. Only discovered it again because it's set in Wyoming.

marleed I read CJ Box for Wyoming, too! Unintentionally, I picked a book that was really more about Montana but I decided it was in Wyoming just long enough to give Wyo credit. 4y
suzie.reads @marleed he does get around 🤣 I'm reading another CJ Box for North Dakota called Badlands 4y
marleed @suzie.reads Haha - for North Dakota, I read Dakota which was also equally about Montana. I think I‘m a heat seeking missile for Montana! 4y

#7 in the series and one of the more fascinating cases that Joe Pickett has had to investigate: Joe is asked by the governor to look into a some murders that occurred in an area of Yellowstone nicknamed the “Dead Zone” where the perfect crime is possible because legal loopholes prevent prosecution for murder. (I think this loophole has since been fixed IRL. But gosh what a nightmare for law enforcement.)

Audio narr. by David Chandler is perfect.

Joe had heard the stories about the drinking contest and the shooting range. Rulon was an #enigma, which seemed to be part of his charm. A one time high-profile defense lawyer, Rulon became a federal prosecutor who had a ninety-five percent conviction rate. #QuotsyMay

This is a very good, very standard mass market thriller filled with all the things you‘d usually get in such a book. What drew me to it was the premise, a very real legal loophole that allows someone to commit the “perfect crime”. I learned a ton about Yellowstone and its laws and also, now I kind of want to visit there again. I did like Joe Pickett as a character and will definitely read some more books in the series.

This is without a doubt one of the best ones he‘s written.

I just read a little bit on this book and I'm intrigued. Has anyone read this one?
