Young Mina lives in a dystopian future Manhattan ruled by male-centric extremists. Every rule oppressing women (currently or previously), like arr child marriages: that's this society. A harrowing & timely reminder that true freedom only comes from struggle, risk & loss.
Love the world building.
COMPLAINTS: Cliffhanger end. F character could be stronger for today. & WHY MUST FORCE IN FORBIDDEN ROMANCE??! M/F friendships matter too! 👇

Oldschool_millenial A big complaint is that the society is very much a cut-and-paste of the US's characature of Islam. I chalk it up to the "every rule that oppresses women is here," but the fact the US sees ONLY negative representation of Islam in media makes this troubling. 8y

Uhg.
The book's getting exciting & has to throw in a forbidden romance--which would be fine with me if it wasn't forced & there was actually time for it to develop into full on romance.
Teenagers, honestly...
Sticking it out b/c there's excitement outside said forbidden romance, and I need to know what's gonna happen in this book's disturbing world!

So far, I cannot recommend this book enough.
As Cohagan says: "Each rule Mina follows is governing the life of a girl somewhere in the world right now." Our willful girl lives in a dystopian Manhattan ruled by extremists. She must wear a veil in public, and is getting married off at age 15. She cannot learn to read, too-except her grandmother's secretly taught her just that.
A glaring reminder to never stop fighting for equality.
